Go to the channel that you like. Select all. Copy. Create new. Paste. Save the new file.

hi Michael - thanks for all the info regarding the filters, i'll look into it on google, too. So, last night i tried converting some photos to b&w using the red channel & they looked great but i couldn't figure out how to save them that way. I converted them over & then saved them as a file but when i open that file back up, there they were back in full colour! ha, ha - rats. So, sorry to keep bugging you about all of this...pandora's box, as i said. I really appreciate you taking the time to answer all my questions, it's really so helpful & i do truly appreciate your effort. All the best to you - jennifer

Jennifer:
I do not shoot with an IR filter - at least not yet... Carol Watson has been taking them for a while and I'm about to buy a filter based on her work.
I was messing with some channel corrections one day and realized that the CCD (the sensor in the D70) is pulling IR and UV spectrums as well as visible light, so I figured just using the red channel is a "goof" way to get some interesting "not quite IR" shots.
I also learned to buy a UV filter for the camera to cut the haze. You can google on D70 and IR to find some examples of IR photography with the D70 - I know it works, I just have to buy the filter ($$$) and start playing.

hi Micheal - it's true, that's what i liked about the red channel - it was somewhat reminiscent of infrared photos. Do you use an IR filter with your D70? I've been shooting it for months now & have always shot in colour & then desaturated in ps but maybe there's a b&w setting that you use for shooting & have filters for your lenses? Oooo, so many questions! you've opened up a pandora's box, i'm afraid. I hope this isn't all too much to ask! - jennifer

Hey Jennifer:
I thought the red channel would be interesting because this is a red flower and it should go "white" - a really neat effect.
In fact, you will see a lot of the flowers will look stunning in the red channel.
If you like that, you may get hooked on IR filters - I think a lot of flowers are interesting in IR because insects can see that wavelength.

hi Michael - thank you so much for the b&w suggestion. I didn't realize that i could make a photo b&w through those different channels & what a difference it makes to just generally desaturating them. Doing it in the red channel does create an interesting look & feel - somewhat softer than just desaturating. Oooo, a new ps discovery! how great! Thanks again! - jennifer

Excellent composition through cropping - unique view.
Definitely minimal DOF - creative.
Have you tried just looking at the B&W image just from the red channel? Might look interesting.

Really like the way you cropped this one...it focuses more on the stem than the actual flower-something not often done. But its cool that you left some of the color still.
