About Newport Ship Yard
Newport, RI 5/6/2005

Nordwind is an 88 foot long composite ketch. In 1938, Admiral Dönitz commissioned Burmester in Bremen (Germany) to build the Nordwind after a design by the then famous naval architect A. Gruber. Pre-World War II she won the Fastnet Race setting a record of 88 hours and 23 minutes that stood for two decades. After 1945 Nordwind was taken to Scotland as a war trophy and became the property of Lord Hugh W. Astor, who raced her on the Solent. Eventually she reached a state of disrepair.

In the late 70s Nordwind became one of the earliest classic yacht restoration projects. Camper & Nicholsons (England) started the refit of the hull, Bultjer (Germany) progressed this further and the refit was completed in Enkhuizen (Holland).

Sail plans and deck-layout were designed by Gerard Dijkstra and the new Nordwind combines ultra modern yachting techniques with the highest standards of traditional luxury.

A really impressive wooden yacht, this is going to be in the Trans Atlantic race next month, and is still under an intense work schedule. Chase boat shots of this classic wooden yacht sailing in Newport Harbor should be coming late next week. Hopefully, these will be used for a story in NLM down the road.

Nice work...I'v been looking at most of you images and you deffently have an eye for objects and landscapes. Framing images and presenting them is very important but you seem to frame and present them pretty good. I like the trip-tics as promo's.
Good quality aswell. Seems your a great landscape, object fine art photographer and etc... However, I see no people photography. What I mean by this is, people connecting with you and the camera in more ways then one Ex. Fashion, portraits, & etc.

I agree Fadel...I can find AT LEAST one nit-pick in each of these photos, but it was something totally new for me - and I was happy to just be onboard such a boat.

Cheers,
Chris

Very beautiful and clean images of this beautiful yacht Chris, I feel the image in the middle is little tilted standing between the other images, but regardless it doesn't affect the beauty of this!

Thanks Cheryl, it looks like the weather conditions are going to be very nice later this week - high fifties to mid sixties and sunny. So I should have some great close up and wide angle shots of this boat and crew in action in Newport harbour.

Excellent collection presentation Chris. You give this baby it's dignity for sure. Love the color and lighting on the photos - very rich.

Thanks Barry, the lighting wasn't very good, and the sky was a pale gray - so it was detail shots only on this day.

Thanks Greg, I was really pleased that one of the asst. editors of NLM took me down to this great boat - he will actually be racing on it in on a Trans-Atlantic next month. I'm going to be really happy if I can get a spot on the chase boat next week - seeing these kind of sailboats in full stride in Newport's great afternoon wind is the only real way to experience their beauty.
