About From a trip to the old Jeddah!

If you ever came to Jeddah city make sure that you go through the tour made by the ?friends of Jeddah? organization,

you can ask about them in any tourist agency here

First they give you a presentation about the history of Jeddah ? Jeddah mans grandmother which refers to eve its believed that eve had lived and died here-

then to an old house which was turned into a museum and other few sights

The main aim of this organization is to preserve old Jeddah which is sadly falling apart

Now about the image!
It was taken in the blazing hot sun of 12 pm! The shop was in shadows and I couldn?t get closer the man obviously didn?t like the conversation and wasn?t in the mood of photography

He doesn't look upset, but doesn't look welcoming either... In any case, this is a nice environmental portrait. You have shown the men in their world, amongst their things.

I don't really like the darkening corners, but it's still a nice photo, Arwa.

Great capture ! Nice idea the vignette, maybe I would prefer a placement of the bright vignette-center slightly more to the right.

Excellent photo, Arwa, but what a look you're getting from the man! I love the repeating pattern of the sandals so precisely arranged on the wall. A very neat man, obviously, as can be seen also in his crisp, white tunic! I get the feeling that the older man has a tendency to ramble on and on and on, and the other is too polite to tell him to shut up! :)
Sorry I haven't been commenting recently!

Dear Arwa, thanks for taking the time - very good explanation. BTW, I assume you've been to Egypt but have you gone to Hurghada? I read somewhere you go to London but do you travel to other countries in Europe / North Africa / Middle East a lot or not too much? Just curious cause traveling and travel photography is my big thing (except lately since the US dollar is SO weak everywhere but soon I'll just have to travel again and except it - I don't see the dollar situation changing soon) After seeing Saeed's shots I wanna visit the UAE and Oman. Anyway, hope you visit my page soon - take care and thanks again for the information, Mark

Hi judi!
This image is one of the ?hit and run? type of photography, press the shutter then run from the scary looking guy! LOL! Its good that I look like a 16 years old without make up on! They think im jus a kid with a big camera!

Wonderful capture of this type of scene. I like the moody feel to it and the way the man is looking at the camera. Kind of like 'you are invading my world' look.

Hello mark!
Yes the red sea is gorgeous!

Yes Jeddah is one of the oldest cities in the Arabian Peninsula!

There were old remains found in the mountains that go back to 200,000 years
Caves drawings and hunting equipments

The unique location of the city motivated man to live in it from a long time ago, its almost like a U shape with the opining of the U facing the sea, there use to be a grandreef with one small opining for ships so even when the Portuguese took over most harbors on the red sea they couldn?t concur Jeddah, their ships kept braking on the rocks, the rest of the U is mountains, high dry harsh mountains with one opening a valley called ?the valley of Fatima?

So actually the architectural work and style of living was pure from any inclusions except from the trading between Egypt, India north of the Arabian Peninsula which is Syria and Palestine and the city of Jeddah

If I remember correctly the city as we know it now is over 2000 years old, with the same name Jeddah-which means grandmother in referral to mother Eve!

Yes its on the red sea and its nickname is ?the bride of the red sea? yes bride not pride :P

The modern Jeddah is full of roundabouts!!!
I can challenge anyone who says that theres another city in the world with the same or more numbers of roundabouts!!!!

It started around the 60s when they were building the new city and a lot of building waste were polluting the surroundings so they got some of the most famous artists at that time and asked them to create sculptures with these materials, metals wood rocks anything!
And the movement never stopped!

We have two open air museums and they weren?t enough Thus the roundabouts

Jeddah is very narrow and small compared to Riyadh!
And not as organized, the population is really high and the space is limited, just recently did the city expand and people are building houses close to the mountains

Hmmm what else!
Jeddah is the most divers and friendly city in Saudi, its used to welcome pilgrims for over 1400 years, around 200 years ago lots of people from all over the world decided to live here after they came for pilgrimage and their last names ?in most cases- mention their origin, al masri = the Egyptian, al magrabi = the Moroccans and so on

If you have any other questions please feel free to ask

And with this we conclude the history lesson of today :P

arwa abdullah   {K:34415} 5/7/2005
LOL you could do that! I couldn?t!
im a bit too shy!
Plus he didn?t look exactly friendly!
thank you saqib!!!

Saqib Zulfiqar   {K:2745} 5/7/2005
Actually I'd change two things.. First one is, I'll take one of the sandals from the wall and then ask the guy on the left to lighten up mate, dont worry ill pay for it. :)

Dear Arwa, Wonderful shot of the market place. Most organized shoe's I've ever seen in a shop like this. I've been to many in Fez, Marrakesh, Cairo, Istanbul, Tunis, etc but they're always over packed with their things for sale (but it only adds to the character which is what makes them so great for photography - if the lighting's not too low). So let me ask you since I'm not too familiar with S.A. I found Jeddah on my map (didn't realize it was so close to the Red Sea) and am wondering is it one of Saudi Arabia's oldest cities? (I always picture S.A. with all these modern buildings but maybe that's more Riyadh) Is the water pretty on the coast? (I was in Hurghada, Egypt a few years ago and it was SO amazing - the most beautiful blues and clearest water on earth! Have you been there? I should post some shots soon) Anyway, very nice photo and I hope you don't mind the questions. Don't forget to see my new shots when you have some time. All the best, Mark

What a lovely shop to buy a couple of sandals for the incoming summer,
that's exactly what i'm looking for! ;-)
nice shot Arwa, but BTW did you noticed the menacing look from the left sitting man?
please, be more careful next time, and don't get yourself in danger!! :-))
..eheheh.. still kidding, but humour is the salt of the life...
more seriously, a pleasant shot from your beautiful country.
Take care

Giorgio

If I remember correctly they are preserving right now 500 houses and they will be ready in about 7 months, it takes a while because they are training youngsters and teenagers the way to build those houses in the same old traditional way
when were you here in jeddah??? :)
paul thank you for the comment :)

arwa abdullah   {K:34415} 5/6/2005
Dear erkoc!
Thank you for the encouraging and caring comment my friend!
I added the light because the sandals in the foreground were distracting
The images taken at the old ?sooq? were taken quickly, look compose aim and click the shutter!
Im so flattered that you liked it this much!
I took lots of pictures that day I?ll keep posting
If you ever came to Jeddah for omrah try coming in the winter, the weather would be fantastic ;)

arwa abdullah   {K:34415} 5/6/2005
hi thilo
The sandals in the foreground were too distracting!
I wanted to focus on the men but they kept pulling me back the rest of the image is in order but then those sandals were disorganized and all over the place! And I didn?t want to crop them out
So I added light
Any other suggestions?

Hi saqib :)
thank you for passing by! :)
So theres nothing you would like to change in this image? ;)

  0

arwa abdullah   {K:34415} 5/6/2005
Hello omar!
Thank you for your insight! I did try turning it into black and white, but the 4 white sandals or shoes on the top left side of the man became even more distracting!
So I kept it in color and added it to the ?street photography? project instead :)

hi arwa,

like that repetitions in patterns on the wall. this image really creates some oriental feelings. I'm not so sure about the vignetting, especially on the left. you seem to hide something there ;-)

good catch anyway!

Arwa this photo is fantastic..Believe me one of the best in its kind. You should be proud of it..I am not qualified to judge its technical merit but looks astonishing. It seems that you used spot metering (are something like that:)).The men are brighter and the sandals are darker..This is absolutely fantastic..And another fantasticity is the sandals..They're beautiful, very stylish..My father always regrets not having bought couple of pairs when in Saudi Arabia for Hadj (pilgrimage).Insa'Allah I will..Looking forward to come to Saudi Arabia one day..Keep posting about your country maybe it will shorten my time to come :)congrats..
