About This mantis got rather cheeky, tried to attack the camera lens. The three "headlights" on the forehead is actually singular eyes called ocellii. This is a 80% crop of the original. Taken with the 105 Micro Nikor with a +1 close-up lense and on-board flashlight, underexposed by 2 Fstops.

I use a vision optics titanium 0.38x AF High Defintion digital lens with macro (72mm diameter lens screwed on to a usual 55mm diameter lens)... at least that is what it tells me. I too use the diffuser with a piece of white plastic or anything else I have at the time over the flash, so that is good to know I am not alone there. Yeah, I have to get pretty close to obtain a shot, unless I attach it to the 100 - 300mm lense, then I can back up a bit. Pretty dodgy way of doing it though. I have several images where the subject is a silouhette in front of a very well lit back ground. the subject is so close that the flash goes straight over the top of it and the lens.

Hi Mike, tahnks for the comment. I saw that you use the zoom with a macro attachment. Im not sure about the actual equipment but suspect that ou have to get quite close to get decent macro. For myself, I use the 105 Micro Nikor which allows a respectable distance from the subject, even with a +1 close-up lense mounted up front. The built-in flash of the Nikon D70 come up high enough to give proper coverage of the whole frame even with the +1 lenseattached. I tried the +2 but only 50% of the frame gets exposed - too close. To soften the harsh flashlight I've fixed a small piece of wax paper (not too thick) in fron of the flash as a diffuser. The optimal solution for insects though is a ringflash (very expensive) or 1 to 2 small flashlights mounted on brackets of differing lengths to provide modelled light. Hope it helps. Kind regards.

What a fantastic macro Joggie, I am finding it difficult to leave your portfolio as your macros are just incredible and far surpass the goal I have set myself for.

Incredible photograph :-)

Best wishes,
Steve

A master of macro! Thanks for the comment, and I can see you have a lot of experience with this style! On Board flash? is that the camera mounted flash (ie normal one) or a ring flash for the lens? I have had a few hassles getting the lighting on the subjects because I am getting too close, any ideas? (apart from backing up, which i am trying!)

Thanks commenting Yutuka. I prefer to use the lowest ISO rating possible - this will give you clearest result with the least noise. Regards.

Hi Peter - thanks for the comment. Yes - and they are very clever. This one is about 3.5 cm in length, although the head as you know is proportionally rather small. Take care and send them on.

Great headshot Joggie. When i count right he has 5 eyes!? How big is this species? Luckely insects are not that big..... imagine an encounter with a man-sized mantis....mankind would not last long, these are real fast killers.
