larry,

yep. the focus needs to stay with the cyclist (a high f-stop helps with this). the pan needs to be at the same speed as the subject. the ratio of good shots to bad is very small. most just come out blurry, but every once in a while....bingo!

take care,

erik

Hi Erik,
How did you do this exactly? did you keep focusing on the cyclist and then pan? that's it? coz ive been trying to do this the other day, wanted to get some really good motion shot. but i seem to fail. besides, I couldnt check if i did it right coz im using a film SLR.

b.rgrds,
LarryM.P.

Woowww Erik..
Another of the photographies which I love? the panning ? motion effect! excelent saturation..
Is big in this case as the effect enlarges the action.. I often executed.. Here..

Very good, Erik!

Extrem motion and perspective by the 14mm. Brillant (and rather difficult), that the bicyclist is almost sharp on your image :)
She is a very interesting looking woman with her red and pink stuff ;)

Ciao, Frank

Hugo, Thanks man. I do know what you mean and I've employed similar techniques in the past for making subjects stand out. This time I decided to go with color all the way. Maybe I'll change my mind in the future?
Cheers,
Erik

Hi E,

First of all, Thanks for your comment, it made me (re-)visit your portfolio, and was kind of struck by your introductory text... In particular by the phrasing of "experimental period". That description is exactly what I value in Usefilm: the opportunity to explore the fields of photography, which are met by (mostly) honest and constructive comments. I also enjoy your site, especially the categorising of the themes, unusual, but very appropriate and creative.

As to this image, I have a persistant ambiguous feeling about this one, as the clashing colours are well in line with the dynamism (visual and technical), but on the other hand the technical merit of this shot, well panned), would call for more emphasis on the main subject, the helmeted woman on her bike, packed with bags. I think slightly desaturating the tones (especially the bright orange building in the background) in PS (or peers) would reduce this ambiguity, if you know what I mean. Technically a shot to be jealous of, very well captured, and such a strong sense of motion, it almost makes me dizzy looking at it.

Cheers,

Hugo

Manu,
Thanks for the comments! Can't wait to see your stuff from Berlin. Congrats on joining the DSLR team. I'm a Nikon dude and probably always will be. They always put out some serious equipment. On the other hand, I know a lot of people who are happy with their Canons. I've been seeing lots of pros shooting events with D-70's lately. It's light, fast, and takes all of the great Nikon lenses.
Cheers,
Erik

Another high-octane shot Eric ;-) ? great fun panning a shot? this reminded of an early post - http://www.usefilm.com/image/669295.html . Also check out ?panning? images by Casey Scholz - not only this one ? http://www.usefilm.com/image/590869.html , but the man?s entire portfolio ? time well spent.

Cheers

Great use of color and motion, Erik...and what a fantastic place Berlin...just got back at the weekend and have taken far too many shots and taking my time working through them. Your comments will be appreciated. I am about to invest in a DSLR either the D70 or the new Canon 350D...any comments?

Cheers

Erik...I like the tilt of this image - it add to the feeling of movement - and then there are all those warm tone colors that further add to make this a very dynamic capture.. K
