Thank you liz...
I was pleased with the POD - never really expected it at all!
- and thank you for adding me to your friends list - it is as good (if not better) an honour that people like yourselves enjoy my work enough to consider me for their friends lists.

There is a wonderful contrast of the gannet against the water and second bird. The framing and presentation are also very effective. A well deserved POTD. AJ

Tejas -
I'm very much learning myself - please - never underestimate yourself. I've seen literally hundreds of photograhs on this site and elsewhere from complete amateurs with very cheap equipment - which blow me away completely!
In terms of this picture - there is actually very little editing apart from the obvious. Taking the picure is the first obstacle. I probaly took close to 150-200 shots on this day. Most of them ended up in the recycle bin.
Shot was taken with a 300mm lens tracking the bird and hitting the shutter at the right moment (or millisecond)
back in the digital darkroom on the computer, I adjusted the levels and sharpened a very slight amount to make it brighter and crisper.
There are many ways to do the framing. I wanted to use a 'stroke' to get the fine black border so I actually copied the wing tip (using a mask) into a new layer 9which i made invisible at first). I cropped the scene to a square apect, applied a 'stroke' and then repeated the process fort the centre. I made the wingtip visible again and just cleaned up around the area.
Glas you took the time to comment. i see yor portfolio is currently empty - please upload some images - I have learned so mucjh from the cmments of others on this site.

WOW Steve, Great shot! Outstanding detail on this 'fisherman'. Excellent DOF and framing. I really like that wing coming out of the frame. The colors are wonderful and everything else being blurred really brings the focus to your beautiful capture of this lovely bird. Marvelously presented.....:) Linda
As my brother would say, "hang this one on your trophy wall"...

Great timing - to get one bird on top of another. The focus is very good too. I also like the border you've chosen, and I think having a bit of the wing coming out of the fram is a really neat touch.

Thanks for your comment on my Great Gull shot Steve, it looks like we both love seabirds! Sadly for me this is a twice-a-year thing. This is a stunning gannet shot, and the framing tops it off to perfection. I haven't got the hang of these 'little touches' yet - thank you for putting ideas into my head!! Cheers Steve.
p.s. great work getting AF-lock against a watery background - I know how frustrating that can be!!

Love the details here Steve. Amazing clarity for this action. They are a bit hard to follow when they are on the hunt. But the wing coming out of the frame really makes this fun. You've made the sea-rat a very handsome looking devil. I myself LOVE seagulls - have a certain grace about them and who else can clean the beach like they can for free no less?! Your's look a little different than ours. Again, great shot! I think he smiled for you... Thanks for your comment elsewhere.

Great shot, Steve, and what a beautiful bird! I also like the out-of-focus bird flying perpendicular to this one's path - very effective with that short depth-of-field and the slate-gray ocean. Clever framing, too! :)

Hi Steve,
I really like the peach colour of the birds heads that adds just enough colour to the image, and also how just the tip of the wing like fingers, creap out from the boarder,
Cheers Mel

Fantastic DOF on this with one bird out and one in focus. Also, their different directional paths really adds a lot. The composition and crop are very pleasing, and I think your presentation is very nice, especially the way you have dropped one wing over and out of frame.
