Solitary trees are a fav subject of mine too. This one expresses the strength of the tree standing alone very well. I sympathize with your Photoshop woes, I face the same demons every day.

Like Hugo, I noticed the halo, and I also think it is ok. The sky is very nice and definitely plays a big part in the picture.
I also see the canopy of the tree being a (very) dark cloud, its trunk evoking images of a lightning bolt, as it twists towards the ground.
Nice and moody. Well done.

Hi Danny, it's the simplicity of this shot that makes it tick. That, and the high contrast in the sky. The white "halo" above the hill seems a bit out of place though, but that doesn't affect the mood. Well done.
