You are absolutely right about the "new snapshot stance" and I do it too in order to compose more accurately with my digital camera. The problem is that it is much harder to avoid camera shake when you hold your arms away from your body... Creative bracing to the rescue!

This is a wonderful shot, Stefan! A perfect 'frame' for the city shot and in the beautiful light of late afternoon. This is the new snapshooter's stance - it used to be elbows bent, one eye scrunched up and face pressed to the viewfinder, now it's camera held out and above, to better see the little LCD screen... :)

Looks like they are photographing themselves. If it's a comment on tourists, myself sometimes included, one does tend to want to place in backdrop that which should be treated with more respect and interest. Maybe the shot of whoever, in front quarter view, taking a photo of themselves with a riot, or something, going on behind them. I don't know.
