I love Checkers even if he looks like a bat, too cute! My b&w duo are named Sylvie the dog and Plácido the cat. Actually, Plácido only moved-in about four months ago...so, they get along real good.

Beautiful dog! I love those ears! My childhood dog was a chihuahua. (I'm assuming Checkers is too.) Nice portrait! Carolyn

Thanks, Andrew, for the suggestions. I was actually using a flash bounced off of the ceiling. There was a brightly lit window behind me, I'm not sure if that is the light you see reflected in his eyes. I try to put dogs in areas where there is no background distraction, sometimes that's not possible-- sometimes it's not really possible to move the dogs, in Checker's case, he took a while to warm to strangers and I, well, I'm actually afraid of Chihuahuas... childhood trauma... give me a Doberman any day ;)

First off I like Checkers and that expression on his face. He is an excellent subject.
We can see that the blown out area on his left shoulder corresponds with the flash reflected in his eyes. You might consider using a more diffused source of light and pulling back just a bit.
The object on the right in the back is a distraction.
After several minutes of staring at Checkers I find I like him even more. I trust this cute dog will be adopted.
Warm regards, Andrew
