The Fetihie Mosque is actually a converted church. It was dedicated to Virgin Mary as Mother Mary at the Wheat Market (Panayia tis Staragoras). It was indeed converted to a mosque when Mohammed Fatih visited Athens in 1458. If you look from the left hand side of the building, you can see that the front part has been added later. The minaret (tower) is not attached to the main building. You can still see its remains in front and to the right of the building. By the way, the old Madrassa (Islamic School) is very close to this mosque -oposite the Aeridhes Roman tower- and an excellent subject for nice shots, especially in the afternoon!

Nicely composed and seen. But you might have over-sharpened it bit or was the light really this harsh? Perhaps you could straighten the left hand edge of the building to really make this image fly. Hope this critiscism is helpful.

Dear Marian, thank you very much for sharing this picture. The mosque is called "Fethiye Camii" (the mosque of the conquest), as "Fatih" is the epithet for Sultan Mehmet II "the Conqueror" (after the conquest of the Constantinople-Konstantiniyye). Is this being turned into a museum nowadays, do you know? Geia sou kai eucharisto para polu gia aute te pole omorphe photographia.

Belle composition et belle architecture, beau piqué; les urnes en premier plan sont un +. Le cloochard rêve la même chose que nous quand nous aurons oublié tout le luxe et l'essentiel. drilan
