About Having uploaded Pinball yesterday, I?ve spent all today trying to improve on it, sad git that I am, and here?s the result.

Again, no PS. This is a set of pen tops photographed through drops of water on a sheet of glass. I spent hours trying to get the glass clean to get good rounded drops, but nothing worked (glass cleaner, silicon spray, WD40, furniture polish, beer?) - the more I cleaned, the flatter they got. Suddenly the penny dropped that I?d got it all a. over t. and I stretched a piece of cling film over: bingo - big fat drops! It?s not quite as crystal clear but for macro shots that?s not too much of an issue. Now the problem is that the heat from the light source (a desk lamp - nothing fancy here) dries the water drops up too fast.

Just in case you needed to know, I dropped the water onto the glass with a wooden kebab skewer - the more drips, the bigger the drop (yup, I think this is starting to get to me?). I also tried numerous other liquids to make the drops - don?t ask. If it?s raining again tomorrow this could go further.

Thanks to Dan Lightner for inspiration and Russell Fletcher for commenting.

Nicole: many thanks for your kind comment. In case you haven't seen it, you might like to look at RainStar II:

This is a rework of the same concept that I did several months later having received quite a lot of advice on the technique.

Thanks Cameny for taking the time to look. As far as this one goes, it was more or less the first one that worked. By this point it was well into the early hours, and when I looked in the viewfinder I pretty much jumped up and down, having been wildly unsuccessful until then! In reality, it is not that great, but things clearly improved over the next couple of days. I've given this technique a rest for a while but hope to revisit shortly...

This one is a bit worse than the other one I just commented. The sample is great, but it lacks a bit of focus, and there are some drops cut juts on the edge of the photo and that's disturbing.

Actually, that's an interesting comment regarding the background, because it was actually a very deep blue but didn't show through well. Thanks for looking.

a great effect. and so graphic and colorful. For my personal taste, i'd add some contrast to get the black darker in the bg. but very impressive. and it's appreciated that you described your process. i'm going to try some of this.

Thanks for your comment, Dan, I really do appreciate it. I guess you'll spot from my "about" that I stuck cling film over the glass. This is great for getting the big beads but does nothing for the see-through quality of the glass. In the long run, I guess I'll try loads more variations, but I'm very flattered that you looked in on this one. Thanks again...

I like this shot very colorful . It is very hard to get the glass clean enough , I use an eye droper to put my water drops right where I want them I geet my camera in place then look through the lens and place the drops one,by one.

Thanks for your support and encouragement, Russell. As you'll see, my previous effort went down the pan. However, I think I learnt a lot today and will probably leave this one up. But if it's pissing down again tomorrow I'll certainly try to push this further...

All the best,
John

AJ,
Now that is awesome.
Goes to show that practise makes perfect.
Love the placement of the drop in the centre of the cirlce of pens.
I think you could go two ways with your placement of the droplets, absolutely random in size and location, or in a symetrical pattern.
I personally like the random scatter.
Keep up the great work

A great image, I have seen these sort ofimages before but they always amaze and captivate me. I must get myself a sheet of glass!

I really like your choice of pen colours, like a star shaped rainbow and they appear to glow from within. I think the bigger drops in which the star shape is curved around the drop look the best.

Thanks.
