I've made some research in the web. Here is the "Trauermantel", in English "Mourning Cloak": http://mamba.bio.uci.edu/~pjbryant/biodiv/lepidopt/nymph/mcloak.htm , yours seems to be that one: "Black Swallow Tail" http://www.npwrc.usgs.gov/resource/distr/lepid/bflyusa/sc/895.htm . But I'm not an expert!!
Cheers, Markus

Beautiful butterfly excellent captured. I don't agree with Teunis. It's not what we call a "Trauermantel" (Grieve Coat). They look different, don't have the small tails and have a white band around the wings. I think it's a species we don't have in Europe.
Regards, Markus

Larry--Oops! I just noticed that this isn't the exact shot, but the elements are essentially the same.

Larry--Here's the original. After cropping it, I used "Layers" and a Gaussian blur to soften the background and then added a light fill pattern to the blurred selection. It was more manipulation than I would have liked, but the subject and the foreground are very nice, and he wouldn't fly to a more photogenic location. I hope that helps . . . --g

Nice composition. Sometimes photos are like paintings, other times they are more like drawings, as in this case. Good work Cecilia
