This finally looks a lot closer to the original slide than the previous post. When I initially scanned the slide I had no clue what I was doing and no PS to correct for scanning problems, but now thanks in large part to the forums here I manage a little better.
By the way, this is in the gorgeous Mt. Rogers area of Virginia. I slept pretty close to where I'm standing, knowing this high, rocky vantage point would reveal a nice sunrise. The Appalachian Trail is off the other side, behind the camera position.
I think you have a very beautiful shot here, it just needs a good crop, I would put the subject right in the middle, since your focal point is not distinctly above or below the horizon line. You still get the contrasting darkness in the corner but it doesn't take away from the mountains in the distance.
