About well the weather cleared up today so i went in search of my lil monarchs who i now know stick around! Unfortunately i don't think i'll be seeing them again as this was the scene that i found :( so much for them being poisonous and thus relatively safe!hope you like the capture though! At least you can really say they contributed to the site till the very end!

Hi Stu, it was very dark and overcast and really struggled to get a decent capture - I will upload the best of the bunch later today. I really struggle with focus when it is overcast (and that is manual focus !!) - I still continue to blame the electronic viewfinder as it really is pants for macro work !

did you have any luck? i find them really difficult to photograph - seems like they have some kinda of shiny substance on the inside of the wings which reflects any light and gives them a cracked appearance - you noticed this before?

Fabulous macro Stu, they are fearsome beasts the praying mantis. Ironically, I also went chasing monarchs on Friday - but went to the local Tropical World to find them !

Best wishes,
Steve

A truly incredible capture Stu. Apart from all the photographic technicalities (which are perfect) to be prepared for such a shot is unbelievable. Difficult to know what project to enter it to. Decisive Moment would have been my choice.

Wow - such a embrace, and SUCH a capture Stu! Just great!

A question. Pherhaps you know who Albert Masó and Manuel Pijoan are? When i had an exhibition in Barcelona I got a book from Albert Masó , a one about mariposas....Same field as you! :)

It looks nasty to me. I usedf to have a praying mantis as a pet and it wasn't that nasty ...lol!!

Great detail and clarity.

Too bad he had to sacrifice himself for UF, but a great capture all the same, SD!

Awwww it almost looks like a crab's claw that has that buttie! Butterflies normally don't live a long time, I am sure there will be more! A gruesome capture, but it is survival of the fittest in nature.
