About Shot this morning out in the forest .
This Hairy Woodpecker was so intent on checking out this wild feeder , that he did not seem to even notice me sneaking up behind him . Just as I was completely ready , he turned around , gave me this look ( like not YOU , again ) , and flew to a nearby tree :)
This picture was taken using natural light , no flash ,no filters , and no PS color manipulation .

Hi Den . I would say that your new tripod setup will be a definite cut above what I have , so I'm sure you will be very happy with it .
The grouse shot ? Well , I actually like both versions . I am somewhat partial to my original version simply because that is how the scene actually looked out in the bush . It also tends to reinforce the quality of the bird's camouflage . It is simply not easy to see at a quick glance . But the cropped version gives a much better view , so I guess it comes down to personal preference . Thanks a lot for your input! I am a rookie so the comments do help .

Thanks for that info Rob. Camera info is always interesting but it's the non camera stuff that you rarely hear about and can be so useful. I will soon become the proud owner of a Gitzo Explorer range tripod with a Benbo 306 Pro head with revolving base so it'll be very similar to your set up. I chose the Gitzo for the flexibility. The centre column can rotate 180 deg in the vertical.
BTW what was your opinion of the crop for your Ruffed Grouse?

Thanks Den . I was able to sneak up to under 15 feet or so . The D70 was mounted on a Manfrotto 190Pro tripod , using a 486 ball head , that was not tightened ( slack ) , so I could move the camera freely . No remote release was used . I set up to be slightly below the bird so I could be looking up at him , to get the blue patches in the sky for added color .

Truly magnificent Rob. The clarity,DOF - all perfect. How close were you to him and did you use a tripod. Whatever, you produced a SUPERB image. Extremely well done.
Den
