About This was an early photo taken with my Voyageur rotary camera. It covers a full 360 degrees (the L and R ends join seamlessly). This garden, which belonged to a former feudal lord, is near the foot of Mt. Fuji. It doesn't look it's best under the 800 pixel limit but it's certainly the best I've taken this year (IMHO).

Thanks Craig. Yep, I'm a Christian dude, and wish you and all your loved ones a happy Christmas, too.

Hi Roger; your 360 degree panoramas are quite enigmatic and sort of mess with the brain;>)-- but I like them. I'd love to see this full size, or a big/long print. Aesthetically and compositionally this really is very nice and a worthy "best of year" I think.

Thanks for kind comments on my Monster Wave photo, it's actually one of my lifetime bests as well as a favorite. If you are a Christian dude, Merry Christmas to you and your family-- if not Happy December-- and Cheers too. Craig

Tim, knowing and admiring your beautiful work I can only hope you get to Japan. The cities tend to be ugly but the countryside can be breathtaking. And be sure to get to Hokkaido (preferably in the summer) as this is quite different from the other islands, which tend to be more similar to each other. Hokkaido is special!

Hi Rodger that is a stunning image..one of many taken with the rotary Camera. My son is moving to just north of tokyo in January....so it looks like i will have another good reason to check out this spectacular country

Matej, there is a picture with me sitting in your suggested position in the "Voyageur" section of my portfolio, the one of the interior of St. Mark's church.

I can't disagree that this is one of your best shots Roger!
Congratulations! I've added it to my favorites!

Matej, thanks for the comments. My panorama website is not coming along at all. I've had other things that took priority. Maybe in the New Year, thanks for the positive feedback.

Richard, I wonder if you think this was stitched? In fact it was taken in one single shot. Not much work at all. My scanner doesn't make it easy to scan the huge negs (6 x 22cm) and my ageing computer has problems with the correspondingly huge files that result. But apart from that, the only hard work is lugging the camera and tripod around. Neither is exactly light!

Hi Roger,

I remember this first time round, and I'm still very impressed with this image. I agree its one of your best this year.

Keep em coming

Now instead of hiding behind the bushes, would it be possible to sit right next to and under the camera? Not that there's anything wrong with playing "Where's Roger" ;-)

Anyway, how is your special panoramic website coming along? (I admit I haven't visited it recently.) It was great fun to be able to scroll this image this way and that, and zoom in and out, and up and down, and so on. Another advantage was that the circle was continuous, whereas in standard presentation you have to have the cut somewhere.

This has to be a lot of work! But, well worth the effort, I think. The horizon seems level and you avoided photographing yourself. This must look very impressive at a larger scale.

John, the Japanese tend to do all the same things at the same times. If you travel out of season or do the "wrong" thing you can feel quite lonely! This garden was fairly remote, and there was a charge for entry. I probably wouldn't have bothered to enter myself if my friend hadn't known it was a great place (it certainly didn't look much from outside).

Wow!!!!!!!!!! How do you avoid crowds of people being in shot, especially in Japan!!
