Lousy??? No way! He brought you back a very good photograph. He's excellent at composition. Everything works very harmoniously. You have some repeating colors, some repeating shapes, a lone figure at water's edge and content galore.

Lousy? Technically it's good!!!! Look at the DOF and the exposure. Beach scenes are notoriously difficult to expose correctly. And the foreground says what it's all about - enjoyment.
