Amazing old house. Nobody lives there I suppose. Wonder why dark photos are so popular... and all those B&W shots? I love darkness and B&W - but the popularity comes because of the digital camera - I think. Because of the digital crisp colours and all other things that belong to the digital many people longing back to more old stuff. The darkness is something else. Apocalypse has always fascinating human kind and now when the world is so brutal.......?
Yes, a thought from me.... Anyway, I like your dark image and it makes me imagine about the people who lived there, what happend to them and what are going to happend now with the house.
Regards, Jeanette

i need to figure out the 'masks' function (and just about every other function). i know what it does, but don't know how to do it. i got a photoshop book for my birthday, so will figure it out.

Ah.. ok, well. that's what masks are for. To select only the sky to work on for example. I use it sometimes when I need to make the background darker without loosing detail in the object. Or when I need more darkness on the one than on the other.. and for many other things..;-)

thanks for the comment gerhard. i first worked on the photo in PS in colour. i used the 'channel mixer' function and selected 'monochrome' to make it b&w. then i used the 'curves' function to get the differentiation in the sky, otherwise the sky would be smooth as you said. both are in the 'images' toolbar. the only problem with this, and you noted it, is that i have a hard time making the picture darker or lighter without losing nuances in the picture that i want to keep as they are.

I wonder how you do the b&w. Whatever I try (mode change, desaturize) the sky stays smooth. The haunted house look works, but I think the whole image could be a little darker to make it more. I also get the idea that the house is somewhat round (probably a wide angle lens?)

This shot was really great! Very moody and eluding.. abit dark/evil.. ;) Love the sky! I guess it would have been even more moody if it was in BW.. but it works like this as well! =)
