Thank you for your comment Samar. As to the lighting, I did shoot this at various exposures, this one was about in the middle. The brighter shots just didn't work, though, for a few reasons...2 of the medals and the rising sun badge on the slouch hat are very reflective, particulatly the badge..it's a lighting nightmare. The main consideration was less technical, though. With the brighter lighting, the mood just didn't seem right for what I wanted to convey, this is a more sober and sombre atmosphere.
I thought of doing the shot in blac and white, or even in sepia, but decided to go for the colour shot purely for that contrast between the photos and the khaki and green. I think I made the right decision on that, and I'm glad you liked the result. :)
