Thankyou Den. We have the aviaries set up as fairly self sufficient. Most things are on timers. This allows us the time to relax and enjoy them and of course photograph them. They become quite used to us after a while and do allow me quite close to them with the camera. I am lucky in that respect. As you will see by my next photo. Judi

Exquisite. How do you have time for photography when you're caring for such beautiful animals? Thanks for giving us an insight to some of the beauty on the other side of the globe.

SD you are funny. There is at least 40 different mutations of Zebra finches with more coming out daily. I have one or two possible new mutations in my collection but it takes about 5 years for it to be recognised, that is, if it is successful. Judi

You mean there's more than one?? we only ever got one kind here (they were domesticated cos they didn't have red eyes) but i didn't know there was a choice - that's why i also chose the cutthroats

Thanks Margaret. They are a lot of work but to see them finally reject your feed for the seed available is a wonderful moment. You know you have got them there in the end. It makes it all worth it. Judi

Thanks Dave. This is actually a wild Zebra finch. The wild variety tend to have the red eye as opposed to the domesticated variety. I suppose it has been bred out of them. But anyway, this is one of 14 in about 3 batches of baby zebras I was given. They ranged from 2 days old to about 10 days old. I received them all at the same time and had to handfeed the lot of them for about 2 months around the clock. I ended up doing school talks with them to teach the children. They were so used to having their food brought to them they couldn't be released so now they live very spoilt lives in our large aviaries with many other finches.

Great shot, Judi! I don't think we have these types of finches here, mores the pity! You have beautiful colour, you can even see it in his eye!
Dave.
