Thank you Kim - The digital edits do give the foreground a little lift but maybe a little of that is due to the crop? On the balance I prefer the original. If you are going to blend in the background from the original shot, you could consider bringing down the values there so as to isolate the foreground main characters a little more.

Hello Kim.
One nice, nice, detail in the foregound in the original is lost, that is the frosting on the leaf in the front. It is a nice thing to have in the clear focus.

Hi Stefan,
As promised, here is the original... perhaps I should try melding the two.. painterly effect in the foreground and normal bg...

After really looking at the image and yours and Dircks' and Becky's suggestions I can see that the bg is way too weird and takes away from the image.

Imageopolis Featured Photo Critique Hey Kim, nice to see you submitting again (like *I* should talk *L*)!

I agree with Stefan as well. For me, it's the fact that the effect makes your background look pixelated. While the rendering on your foreground flowers look natural, the background looks like there's something "wrong" with it . . . like the computer compressed the photo oddly.

Instead of using filters, try using brushes on the photo. If your painting-with-a-mouse skills are good, the smudge tool can create a nice effect. Blurring and/or darkening the background might work as well. Anyway, you have to whole weekend to play around with it. Good luck!

Hi Stefan! I will upload the original in a day or two... just to satisfy your curiousity! *grin*
I really wanted to play with the painterly effect in ps though, to see what could be created. Do you find the overall effect to harsh, or just the bg?
Anyways, I will upload an attachment on this image soon.
Thanks again!

Thanks for the helpful suggestion Dirck... I will have to play with it a little more in PS and smooth out the background.
Expect something within a day or two!

Wonderful intense colors in this, Kim! The painterly effect was quite effective, making this look like a rich, dense oil painting! I think I agree with Stefan in that the background does look a little odd - it has the kind of swirly distortion you see through heat or fumes. I think it would be worth trying a version with the backgound smoothed a bit and see how it looks. The overall impact of the photo is great, though!
(Love the name "Chilliwack", too - brings a smile to my face! :)

Very nice image, Kim! I like the DOF effect, adding to the interest of the foreground flowers. Colours and detail are excellent!

The effect is fine for the foreground but I do not like what it did to the background. Would you show the original just to satisfy my curiosity?
