About
A hybrid rose, partially open, but wound up tightly inside..a bit like me, really. There was enough light to take it with a slow shutter, but i sped it up and used a stopped down flash.
What I mean by "stopped down" is reduced intensity. The flash can have the brightness reduced or increased from the normal. In this case, I didn't need artificial light, there was enough to take the shot, but by using the flash at it's weakest setting, it gave more carachter to the shot. As a result, I had to use a higher shutter speed to compensate for the additional light, otherwise it would come out overexposed. The faster the shutter the less light reaching the film (or sensor). Also, the higher the aperture f number, the less light, so its a matter of balancing the 2, depending on what kind of depth of field you want, or if the subject is still or in motion. FYI, this shot was done iso 50, 1/1000sec, f2.8, flash -2/3ev.In hindsight I think I would have been better maybe f5.6 at about 1/500 for better depth, allowing the back petals to be in focus, but all behind still dark. Without the flash the background is more visible (grass) and would have needed about 1/20 sec exposure at same iso rating. Hope this helps :)
Beautiful rose. Like the way you relate it to yourself. That's very healthy behavior, you know. Seriously, tho, whats a stopped down flash? and please, help me understand the corolation between light and shutter speed if you would, please. I keep finding out how much I don't know. That's what I love about this site!
Nice colors and sharp detail. I think this is a bit like us all - wound up inside. That's the nice thing about the whole Usefilm experience - the universality of it.
