About Hi People,

I've been away for a while. Lots of work, and alot of other things to take care of.... But as it's sometimes necessary to take a break, it's also good to be back....:)

As Always, I try to come up with something new. The following triptych is something of a mixture between a creative flower (hey! Everybody needs to venture out into unfamiliar aspects of photography!) and food: The edible flower.
Initially, this tripple triptych was composed for a wedding album I made, showing the peripheral aspects of those memorable days for the couple. In this case the buffet.

Looking back at it now, I'm still amazed all flowers were not only part of the decoration of the buffet, but actually the main ingredient for the salads. Very tasty indeed!

As all shots were taken under the same circumstances, the settings of each of these shots was approximately the same:

Exposure time: 1/1250'
Apperture: f6.8
EV value: -0.3 EV
ISO value: 400 ASA
No flash.

Photoshop only used for composing the three shots, no other tricks.... The credit for the idea of this frame goes to Peter de Ryke.

Indepth comments, are, as always, highly appreciated.

Cheers,

Hugo

I like this one.....
I think that you applied the rule of thirds better in this shot but when I look at I look at 9 boxes and i might have flipped the 3rd image (the left one) upside down and then my eye would be drawn across the frame on a downward slant.
And to respond to Amna at the weddings that I attend the food is on the same level as the the bride and groom, infact my wife and I joke that if we ask my father-in-law about a wedding we don't mention it by the bride and grooms name but by what food they served.

Hi Emgy,

Thanks alot for your comments, its always a pleasure to read your extensive thoughts, not only on my photos, but also on those of others. I always feel they touch the essence of what I had in mind perfectly (Obviously, that can only apply to my photos, as I'm not qualified to judge the intensions of others...;o)

I always plan the sequence of shots, quite deliberately so, but not necessarily on consistent grounds. I spent several days rearranging the photos, exchanging them with other bits and pieces, ending up with a different solution every time. Finally, I'd settled for this sequence and composition, exactly on the grounds you described.

Maybe its not a good sign that it took me so long. Although it did fit nicely amongst the other shots in the album, I'm still not quite satisfied with the sequence as it is....

In the third one, I did plan each of the shots, and the way they would look and fit together prior to taking the photos. It's what makes the kick in composing a triptych.... I think the only way to fully see how the combination of three individual shots fit together is to look at the overview page in my portfolio with the three images in one row. With this series, I'm not too satisfied with that overview either....:)

Thanks alot for your constructive and indepth comment... Always very much appreciated!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo!!!!!
You've been eating flowers at a wedding????? Hahaha??.
.So.... how did they taste? I hope you didn't get sick! - (Just kidding...) - I know that many flowers are edible and that in a few countries they are a common ingredient in the kitchen but....I've never heard of anything similar in this country.
I'm late again with my comments but, to be honest, I waited on purpose because I was very curious to see the following posts.
First of all, let me congratulate you with the originality of this series - Do I like it?
YES, very much. This image is very beautiful as I think that the composition expresses pretty well the unconventionality of the wedding. Moreover, the subject itself is the perfect reflection of an extravagant happening. Above all, I can feel here the pleasant atmosphere of an enjoyable and happy day expressed by the presence of the flowers.. This said, I?m certain that this series will give an extra dimension to the collection of wedding photos, adding the originality we hardly ever see in ?traditional? albums.
Further more, I can only say that I like the selective focus and the choice of angle for each shot. I believe you planned the whole thing and you did it superbly. You probably also planned the order of posting the shots, in order to create what you call (or used to call) ?tension? in the expectations of the viewer. Great achievement!!!
Hugs ? Emgy

Hi João, Thanks for your comment. Both you and Saeed commented, it IS impossible to make everybody happy... But that's also what makes UF so useful to learn and experiment and improve our work. Especially critisism is good to help one see their work from a different point of view, and take a few steps back and understand the flaws in your own photo, if you know what I mean.

About the centered focus as the eyecatcher, I know exactly what you mean, it's what I tried to achieve....;o) Thanks!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Hugo,

As Saeed said in the other photo, when people do creativity is quite difficult to match everybody's taste.

For me, I like this one the most, it's a better and different composition, more original.
The other photo, gets the eye attention because the colours are more "confuse", not like this very dominant green.

Another eye cathcher in this photo is the centered focus. We see upper zone and lower zone out of focus, and that make the center even more intense. It seems that we want to "join" the 3 centers in just one horizontal composition.
I hope I made my self clear to you... (pour and confused english, I supose)

I'm looking forward to the final photo of this series.

Very original and fantastic compositions.

I always wondered what you Dutch people do with so many flowers... now I understand, you also eat them!!!:)) Serious, I would love to try this. Maybe on a visit to your Wonderful Country!

Cheers

I like this as three separate images Hugo but not side by side. They have beautiful soft colours, delectable textures and great lighting. I find it a tad distracting as each has its own hues and light. My eye wanders and can't focus on one aspect. Maybe a slight separation with white and the same thin brown line as surrounds the whole.

Dear Hugo,

there's not much to add at this point ;-)

If there is no direct purpose with this tryptich, that's fine for me. Probably I'm used to some meaning behind that when watching your great pictures =)

let's say it this way: I'm not so happy with the way you combined these three images as the transition is too hard for me.

Now I'm moving to the next in series =)

take care,
thilo

Hi Christian, thanks for your indepth comment. I agree with you on the DOF; it was kind of difficult to make that fit propperly without converting to major PS rework. It's a bit soft any how. When combining these three shots, I paid more attention to the light, which I think is consistent in the overview, than to the DOF. Thanks!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Arwa, Ofcourse your opinion matters! It helps melook at my shot differently, which makes me learn alot. I'm not sure what you mean by provoking, though.

As you correctly say, it's only the first one of three. I began to see the squashed and crowdy element you mention. As I've used this shot in a wedding album, the consistency with the other images places this one in a different perspective, which I can't recreate on UF. If you'll read my comment to Hermen and Thilo, you'll see what I mean.

I always appreciate your comment, thank you!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf Hugo de Wolf   {K:185110} 9/23/2004
Hi Thilo, as promised, a reply, which will be quite lenghty I'm affraid.

First, as I replied to Tom and Hermen, the colours are quite representative of what they were, the difference is due to a difference in lighting and placement of the dishes on the table. It was quite tasty, and that's still how I remember it..;o)

About the triptych, it's a different way of presentation. I use these kind of shots in a wedding album, mixed with a few overviews, inbetween the pages with the important stuff. It allows me to use various images on one page. The composition of the tree images, combined in one is not a standard thing. In this triptych, there will be three different images too.

Getting into the purpose of this triptych, apart from it's functional use is more difficult. It's not a common way of presentation, adjusted for it's coherence in the other shots of the wedding album. I guess that's more difficult to see on Usefilm, not having seen the wedding album. There's no specific meaning / point behind it, and there's not always a need for that!

Lastly, ofcourse I don't get you wrong! It not being your style happens to me too, occasionally, when I comment on your shots...;o) And that's completely allright. Can't please 'm all, but what I do atmire is your honesty and indepth critisism. It's something that also helps me improve my shots, as I get a chance to look at a specific image from a diffent point of view. That's what I was getting at in my comment to you too....

Thanks again, It's good to be back!

Take care,

Cheers,

Hugo

You are right Hugo, in my criticism I judged this photo 'individually'. In the series of the wedding reportage it makes an excellent variation.

  0

Hugo de Wolf Hugo de Wolf   {K:185110} 9/23/2004
Hi Hermen, thanks for your comment. I see what you mean. I think it's the difference in lighting that creates the difference in exposure. About the tastiness, much of that is lost in a close-up of a cold salad, I think. It depends strongly on the lighting. It's a bit busy, but then again, that's part of this triptych. The overall image will become clearer once I've posted the third shot, I promise!

I've used this approach on a number of times, it fits quite well in creating a new "chapter" for the wedding dinner. Only shots with happy, talking people tend to get boring, so I mix 'm up a bit....

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Tom, Thanks for your comment. The flowers actually tasted awesome...;o)

These shots were taken within a five minute span of eachother. The contrast of the different exposure was partially created by a slightly different angle towards the light, but after taking another look at the original shot, there also is a difference in brightness caused by a different light; two of the disches (the one on the left and the one on the right) were placed in a shadowy area, whereas the middle one stood in direct sunlight... (as the sun was setting, that didn't make much differentce, I could use virtually the same setting in each of those three shots on Aperture priority. EV and colour temp / white balance were left unchanged.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hello Hugo,
cretaive work on your part again. Each of the pictures is a bt... messy ? But the three togeteher combine into a sort of tapestry. It works because they are in the same hues, same shapes, and also because the light comes from the same direction in all three cases. It is, to me at least, reminescent of the panel paintings of the Art Nouveau. With this in mind, I miss a full DOF that would have revealed better the various lines drwan by the contour of the leaves and flowers.

I myself see alot of 'Insects' especially at 3000% magnification so Andrej is NOT really wrong at all, but you can keep on eating them Hugo if you find them tasty also ... LOL!

P.S. Drink alot of water now to 'flush' your system ... Okay?

Hi hugo welcome back
you were surely missed
Nice come back with a thought provoking image, I've looked at it over and over again and I still cant make up my mind of wither I like it or not (not that my opinion really matters)
U've given me such great constructive critiques before so I feel obliged to leave one too instead of just saying hay great pic (and it is a great pic by the way)

Heres my 2 cents about this image: Food picture should stir up the appetite and cravings, this image didn?t make me feel this way, maybe because its too squashed or too crowded?
but since it?s the first of a series its too early to judge
hope u didn?t mind my comment
Anyways welcome back :)

Dear Hugo,

nice to see you back in duty ;-)

the image is quite difficult to comment on as it shows several layers of interest - and points to argue.

first of all, I adore the fresh green and yellow colors. that's something that makes this image special. second, the triptych... I admit that I don't get the point here. The actual connections are rather harsh, and I don't catch the idea of bringing these three single shots together - even if I read the about. triptych are always nice to see, but in this case, I don't see a purpose, just the means.

Don't get me wrong: I like the refreshing colors and the refreshing idea of a special food triptych. But that's definitely not my style ;-)

anyway, nice to have you back and I hope to see more stuff soon from you.
take care,
thilo

Hi Hugo,

good to see you are back :)
An unusual photo, I have some mixed feelings about it. I like the colours and the composition (with the three vertically aligned parts). On the other side, the overall image is very busy. The left panel is the odd one out for me... especially because of the dressing. It may have been very tasteful, but it does not look like that to me on a photo...

Nevertheless, I appreciate your exploration of new photographic fields :)

Hi Hugo...

Welcome back!!!! I missed you amd your pictures!!!!

As always you came back with a very original idea... Never heard of eating flowers in a saldad... Comming bach to your picture... The idea is great and original... but there is something there that I do not like... I think It has to much on it, and it is very distracting... I cannot concentrate on it... It is like my eyes begin to go from one place to another and cannot focus in neither one of the pictures... Maybe it can be the vertical composition... I don't know... Nevertheles, I like very much how different the three abstracts are... And the colors are lovely...

Again weloome back... You were missed...

Welcome back my dear friend!

I hope you enjoyed your break and free time from us ;) as long as you come back, we need you!

I'm getting really hungry when I look at this triptych, there are more than one view necessary to see the food between all the flowers, colours and the irritating starting moment to realize the three different parts.

Flowers are tasteful, indeed, but I wouldn't want to live like a cow, eating nothing else ;)

Cheers,
Verena

hugo, you're back! good to see you out and posting again ;^) i remember we spoke about this shot a while back. mostly in veiled references but enough to give me an idea of what you were going to do. i have to say, this is not what i thought i would see. when you mentioned edible flowers i imagined those sugar flowers they put on wedding cakes. how interesting - a flower salad. how was it?

i dig what you've done here. what jumps at me the most (other than the unusual subject for you) is the contrast of the different exposures. makes the middle pane appear to "float" above the other two and gives the impression of being a movable pane that could slide over the other two. like a sliding glass door. is that just EV adjustment or a slight color temp adjustment as well?

take care,
tom

Hi, Hugo. Nice idea. It would be great to put in a frame and hang on the wall.
Something however doesn't let me completely comfortable with this. Maybe it's the mess in the arranjement of the components (flowers, leaves, food). But then, most probably, this is what makes the picture. Whatever...
It's a great picture. Congrats.

Hi Max,

Thanks for your elaborate comment and description. As discussed before, the diversity of opinions, styles and likes and dislikes of the UF photographers make this community as valuable as it is, and you are a huge part of that. I always value your oppinion highly!

In the last rays of evening sun, the wedding was very pleasant and leasurely. I enjoyed making their wedding reportage enormously, as everything radiated the joy of the day.... That might sound a bit corny, but it's the best way of putting it.

I always like mixing still life shots with the photos of the events themselves. It livens up the album, and enables the "incrowd" to enjoy the things around the couple and the entire day, for that matter afterwards. It's not only the people that make a wedding....;o) These shots were taken for that purpose....

Cheers,

Hugo

The Japanese quite often serve flowers as part of the meal. I've learned that I don't really like the taste of chrysanthemums, for instance. (The Japanese word for this flower is easier to spell and remember, though: "kiku.") While quite in favour of three vertical panorama slices being welded into one frame, I would really have liked a clearer impression of what we are actually looking it in the individual pics.

I don't think a B&W conversion would do any good to this image, as it's primarily the fres tones and the lighting that makes it (for me at least...;o) Besides, converting it to B&W would make it only more dull than it already is, if you understand what I'm getting at.

Cheers,

Hugo

Groeten,

Hugo

Hi, Hugo, I understand what you mean about work... and time.. I have been away from comments, too, and I?m feeling guilty... there are a lot of stunning pictures from friends that I can?t comment and give a feed back...
About this composition: the colors are well balanced.. and is a very creative work and subject... but I wouldn?t say I like it. I can?t explain it ...my english is not good.. but the line, the rectangular shape bothers me. Maybe another mask shape.. or a b&w version(or a monochromatic..)... I don?t know.. or several small squares like a chess table...can you understand? But I think it is a matter of taste.. maybe I?m still very traditional.

Anyway, is a well done collage, original and unusual, and it ?s well presented. The frame is perfect.

Cheers,
Carmem

The idea is very interesting, I think you are the first photographer to concentrate on food during a wedding ;-)

Hallo Hugo.
I thenk so
The middle part to left.

Hmm.. from the thumbnail I though it was one of Teunis's flower/butterfly shots.. Although rather busy. Once opened it's clear it's not his, but it's still busy.. But not busy in the big city way, more busy in the "bazilian carnaval" way.. colors everywhere.. Joyful.. Bravo..
