Here we were on a peaceful walk on the promenade in Cleethorpes when I spotted the Confederate flag flying. admittedly there was also the Union Jack and the Stars and Stripes Flying as well as the Swedish flag but HMMMMmmm WHY the confederate flag?

Ok...short order history. The UK backed the US South in the Civil War (1861-1865) because of the cotton industry. To make things short and concise...MANY UK areas supported the South in the US Civil War...See the "Alabama Claims"... and even in South America, Brazil...the Confederate flag flies high. The US South hoped the UK and France would enter the war on their side, to defeat the North, the Union, the Boys in Blue. It is not uncommon to see the "Stars and Bars" (as opposed to the Stars and Stripes) flying in UK or South American states. The actual connection between Cleethorpes and the US south can be connected to the US Southern Smyth Brigade, who had many family members in the Cleethorpe area. That is the best I can do in this limited space. Sorry.
