About I'll explain for those who are not Dutch: The 'thing' you see on the plate is called in Dutch a 'beschuit met muisjes'. It's a kind of biscuit with anis topping (the 'muisjes', which literally means 'little mice') and is given to family and friends who come to admire the newborn baby. Pink 'muisjes' are for girls, blue for boys. The reason that you see both here is not because a twin was born, but because the shop was out of pink ones and the father had to buy the blue ones. If this sounds confusing to you, please ask Hugo de Wolf to explain better!. :)

A beautiful photo and a wonderful tradition! What a nice way of including the visitors in the celebration - a link with the past for the new arrival! I like the just-out-of-focus mother and child in the background, giving context and warmth to the scene. I remember as a kid with my friend Pieter eating some sort of flat cracker smeared with butter, then topped with chocolate sprinkles (Droste chocolates? :)

Hi Marion, Can't see these things any more... They're nice though, and I'll happily explain what they're like, but I think you did a very good job already.

Same with the photo. I like the shallow DOF, and the tones. Well captured... Better put: Outstanding shot. The baby not being the center of focus is an excellent touch. The wide aperture leaves it recognisable enough. Still not sure if it's a boy or a girl, and whose kid it is....) Againg, a good choice of NOT converting this one to B&W...)

Cheers,

Hugo

No need to change it... I think you can see it as a portrait but it has also a still life element. And I think it is this combination that makes this image special!

You're right Hermen.....still life is a bit out of place here. I'll change it! :)

Congratulations with your newborn !
The focusing point makes this an original and unusual portrait (still life?)

Mother and child are doing just fine!
You want some boxes of 'muisjes'?
Just mail me your address and I'll send some!
Do you know/remember 'gestampte muisjes' (crushed little mice)??? They are my favourite....
:)

"muisjes"... simply the best addition to nice toast!

Where can I order some... not picky... white blue pink... a good few boxes!

Thank you for the reminder...

May the mother and child be healthy!
