About One of my dogs, Neko, enjoying the last rays of the spring sunset at Lighthouse Park. I used a smaller DOF to pull him from the background as well as some fill flash to give some catchlights in the eyes.
Still trying for calendar quality shots. Your comments are appreciated!

Quite a handsome portrait of your dog named Cat. :p This may sound either stupid or strange, but one of the reasons why I really like this photo is because Neko's tongue is visible, but it's not hee-uge. I know there's nothing you can really do about that, especially if they've been running around all afternoon, but personally I find oversized tongues bit distracting. Perhaps it's because I'm not a dog person. *shrugs*

I only noticed the slicing effect of the background when Mary Sue mentioned it. Because it's both dark and blurry, I think you can get away with it. I agree Neko needs a bit of fill light. Perhaps you could wrap Fraser up in tinfoil and get him to stand to one side next time . . . ?

Thanks so much Mary Sue... it's the little things like this that really help and now I can add it to my list of things to check when taking dog portraits.
Now that you've pointed it out it really makes sense... hard to miss it! Thanks again!

Kim, this is another appealing doggie photo. I love 'em.

I agree with Stefan about the shadows on Neko's face. More fill flash might have helped.

What stands out to me the most, however, is the background. Even though you successfully separated Neko from the background with the DOF, that lineation that slopes across the background cuts his head from his body. I am referring to the side of the hill...just before the trees. Perhaps it seems more noticable because there are features on his head that seem to align with the lineation. (Is that grammatically possible?) For example, in the same plane as the background lineation you can also see the tip of the ear, which is aligned with the bottom of the face shadow, which is aligned with the upper lip on the left side of his face, which is aligned with the shadow on his tongue.

This may not be bothersome to others, and most importantly, may not be bothersome to folks who buy calendars, but I thought I'd mention it.

As in your previous dog photo, this light is as sweet as it comes. The warm tones make Neko seem even more lovable. Please give him a Milkbone from me!

We joked when we were thinking of names that we would call him kitty... then we found out a week later after we decided on Neko that it was cat in Japanese. Man, the looks we get when walking through the touristy parts of town... all the Asians are laughing when we call Neko! I can probably lighten those shadows a bit in PS... thanks for the comment!

this is very good but i think i preferred the immediately previous shot. maybe it is the shadows on the right side of his face which i wish were just a little ligther. how does feel about being named "cat" (in japanese)? :-)

He's quite expensive... a few bellyrubs, lots of hours playing ball and sometimes (the nerve) he'll ask for Milkbones!
*grin*
Thanks so much for the comment... I know I've been improving on the dog shots, and comments like yours let me know I'm on the right track!

I don't know much about shooting for calendars or what they look for, but I can see this in a calendar!

How much does your model charge you a day? :)
