About This is the statue outside one of our local supermarkets. I always think those upstretched hands are feeling for rain, or possibly a gesture to the birds to keep away (if so, they were pretty ineffectual).

Hi Roger, well balanced shot, and well composed! The DOF singles out the subject very well. I enjoyed reading your comment about the upstreched hands. They sure send that message....

Thanks for your comment, I like the reason not commenting on the first one...;o) The many comments also have to do with my numerous replies....

Cheers,

Hugo

Lucky you. The viewfinder on my Canon has a coverage of only 90%, so unsurprisingly, unwanted things sometimes sneak into the frame.

The birds seem to like the statue very very much. You have captured a great tonal range here Roger.

Keith, this is one of a long series of photos of Tokyo statues that I am taking, very few of which are posted here on Usefilm. In that context this is a valid member of the series but I must admit it has less merit as a stand alone. You might be surprised, since you suggest less DOF, that I used Gaussian blur to get the background to look MORE out of focus than the original negative. Comes of using 800 ISO film... and slow lenses. Can't restrict DOF too much with that combination, alas. Maybe I should get me that lovely Voigtlander F/1.2 35mm lens....

Matej, the space around the statue was very restricted, and I was glad to have my panorama camera with me so that the vertical "reach" was enough to include the whole thing. My viewfinder is obviously pretty accurate, as I got exactly what I saw, with the fingers not quite touching the edge of the frame. I actually cropped some of the excess height away, although Antonella thinks I should have cropped more. (Thanks, Antonella.) I left the extra space to give a bit of breathing room...

I'm wondering about the crop. The fingers of both adults as well as the edge of the base are so very close to the edges. A bit more room would perhaps be nice.

Anyway, when I read what you wrote about the gestures being ineffectual at keeping the birds away, I was reminded of a statue photo by Robert Doisneau; I'll email you a scan :-)

Hi Roger, thanks for those kind words for my Northumbrian series, much appreciated.

This is a difficult image to critique, the technical aspects of it are fine, good tone, good crop, good perspective. Possibly needs less DOF to isolate the background 'clutter'. However I don't 'feel' anything from the image on a personal level. As I say a difficult image to crit with any conviction.

Regards

Keith

Hi Roger, fantastic picture!!! IMO I would have cropped a bit the upper side to balance the framing, otherwise magnificent! Many congrats,Antonella

haha, that is what I thought also, incredible all the bird droppings. One thing is for sure, you captured the monochrome grey tones perfectly. Have a good day, roger. Rob.
