About one more 'nightride' photo for all those who liked the series. I tried a different angle this time, assisted by the cullmann suction cup and Nikon cable releases,as always. For the first time the road isn't visible, thus creating a sense of 'Deep Space' travelling - or anything else you like.. thank you :-)

This along with the rest of your night ride shots are amazing! The idea to do this is a great one at that. I have to try this sometime. Just fantastic and thanks for the concept.
You have now been added to my friends list. I look forward to more of your photos.

thank you for your comments :-))

Robin:
my camera can meter up to 30sec.
with my 'nightride' photos I usually bracket, but this is mostly to change the effect rather than getting the 'correct' exposure.I know from experience that any speed more than a couple of minutes would do for this type of image;moreover, print films don't seem to bother at those speeds.
Generally, scenes that require long exposures are usually rather dark,so with 100 ASA film in my camera I meter the scene at my lens' widest aperture in order to get the equivalent shutter speed. If the camera reads 30secs@f2.8 it equals 4minutes@f8,but I add 2 more stops to balance for film's reciprocity failure thus ending with 16minutes@f8.
If your camera meters up to 1sec and you aren't able to get a reading even at your lens' widest aperture,I'd suggest turning the ISO/ASA dial to the highest available setting and meter again.Supposing you get 1sec@f4 for ASA1600 then you can shoot at 1minute@f4 for ASA100 film (5 stops + 2 recipr.stops)
Reciprocity failure hasn't been always a problem for me (I have often ignored it without getting unpleasant effects) but keep in mind that it may also result in strange/unacceptable color shifts.
Bracketing is a recommended practice, whenever possible. If your camera tells you the 'correct' shutter speed is 2secs,make additional exposures at 4 and 6 secs to be secure.
Not to forget the great help software can provide in the post-processing stage.

be happy :-))

Cool shot. How do You meter your shots? Do you bracket your exposures or is your camera able to meter that long of a shot on AP priority?
