Possibly, but black areas/negative space can also be effective. I think emptiness in photographs is highly underused. I don't mind the black space at the bottom of the photo, but perhaps it is a bit too big. I feel the photo might have benefitted if the camera was raised a little, therefore putting the table/wineglass on a vertical third (to go with the existing horizontal third).
Is that a cell phone on the table? Why is it there? What is it saying? I almost find it uneccessary; the wine glass is enough. If you want to keep the phone, it could have been pushed closer to the glass; they don't feel close enough to be related to each other (though I could be wrong . . .)
Aside from these two nitpicks, I really like this photo. The tones are great and the darkened edges add a stylish atmosphere. You're a beginner with B&W?! I would never have known. I hope my first B&W photos look as good!
