Well, you really do have a dilema here with what appears to be a beach that runs east/west instead of north/south. It's either squint or back of the head with no side-lit walking down the beach shots here. As for the wind-blown hair, I like the idea. I'll have to admit that at first I thought the hat looked "pasted" in but then I thought;"Louise would never do that!". My eyes go right to it and keep going back to it. I dunno, probably just me. Also, I've always liked the wind-blown hair thing but I'll agree that the squinty-eye thing just doesn't work at all. Maybe you need to find a north/south beach.(?) I must say though that the colors here a nice along with the angle of view and placement of horizon along with that soft vignette. The lines of sea foam lead the eye right into....opps, there's that hat again! ;-)
Hey, just thought of something, what if.........she were walking away (or even towards the camera) as in the original post but looking out to sea? Nice profile, no squints, hmmmmmm.........and go with the wind-blown hair. Yea! Looks good in my head although such things don't always work out in real world applications. Worth a try perhaps. You could even keep the hat if you really need to.(just do one without it for me) One other idea, sunglasses (ala Elton John) for those "into the sun" shots. Rather stylish don't ya think?
About the vignette thing, it's the same as what I do but you're adding one extra step to get there. It's actually how I USED to do it. Only so many ways to do it I guess.

Hi Karen, thanks for your kind words. For the soft vignette I make a selection with a feather of about 50 or 60 then do a select inverse. Make an adjustment layer with a colour fill (white) and that's it. You can also just do an adjustment layer/colour fill and use your brush tool (black and white mode) to colour thru image and leave the edges soft. Hope that makes sense!!

Wonderful image. I love children's photos and love back shots. Like a window into their world, so this image is right up my alley. Along with many other images photographed by you, this goes into my favorites folder. Composed beautifully. A BEAUTIFUL IMAGE - ONE TO CHERISH!!!
PS - I definitely understand about the squinting and blowing hair. I have that problem all the time with my daughter. She is very squinty and with her long hair; there are always strands in my way.
Beautiful work. Great decision to go for the back shot. I love it!!

Thanks Bob, Her hair is everywhere and she is very squinty facing the camera. I also shot her backlit which helped a bit but it was definitely challenging. Here's an at the camera one. Oh figured out the whole soft vignetting thing. You have to make the selection FIRST, then do an inverse, then do the solid colour fill thing and voila!! Had to do the hat thing to keep her hair from being completely everywhere.

Hi Louise, looks windy and cold. That hat really stands out since the rest of the photo is rather toned down probably because the mist and the direction of the light. Composition is fine but I wonder if having the subject face the camera would help in this particular image. Just wondering.
