Jim - I've commented on this photo before and think it is marvelous. I just want to thank you for showing the "before" picture and for your detailed explanations on all your photos. I'm a long way from being able to manage PS so masterfully but your discussions encourage me (and I'm sure many others) to learn more about the craft.
--I love New York but it gets less credit than I realized for this image -- what a transformation!

First, thanks for your kind comments...:-) I read all comments about this picture....and your answers...I don't understand why, after this outstanding work in PS, you had chosen not to correct the tilt of buildings.... Except these technical considerations, this image is grand ...... and moving.... because I believed in the beginning that it had been taken certain September day....

Hello Anna:
One image I hope you'll re-post some day is the "Cubist Abstract" -- can't recall your original title, but it was a pure abstraction, very dark with reds, browns and golds. Maybe I just missed it, but I searched "In My Mind" the other day with no success.
I loved this cubist image and it inspired the "River of Tears" NY Harbor scene in January, from which much of my current PS work has evolved.
Hello Paul:
I see you're a photography student, so I'll make you a proposition. You bring me 200 national magazine covers with YOUR name on the photo credits, and I'll lighten up on the Photoshop. perspective and point of shooting of this cityscape are very nice, expecially for me, cause I do love the Chrysler building; thank you for sharing your editing technique with us with us; although I generally prefer a more conventional type of photography, your work is reaaly interesting and well done. I'd like to see the original file and also a BW "natural" version, I think it should be also great, with such a light and cloudy sky... regards - marco

Jim, this is a stunning image. Lucky find for you that morning. I am wondering if you tried levels before anything else to bring up the shadows? The only other thing is that the image looks much better without the white building in the lower right corner. Try painting in black where the white is and clone in one of those tiny windows from the black building. But still a great image.

Jimm - This is a great picture. The sky is unbelievable and it looks impeccible to me. I am not as well versed or proficient in PS as you so of course nothing looks flawed to me. As always you have done a wonderful job creating a powerful photo. I love your detailed descriptions of PS done to your work, it is of great benefit to me, who is trying to learn PS. I would love to see the original version of this as to see the difference. Great work.

I don't see much improvement in the new attachment, so it must just be the jpg devils. Eric, you're right about the perspective -- it's about the only thing I didn't rejigger. And Carol, thanks for the welcome, ummm, I think? Guess I'm not the only one. From the new donors list it looks as if there's a minor migration in progress.

Hello Dave Martinidez:
I think maybe it's me who should be using Peta's reading glasses. I read the USEFILM upload spec as 650 pixels, not 640. Your basic point that the sky doesn't really match the foreground is absolutely correct -- although the buildings SHOULD be tack sharp. Actually, the clouds probably wouldn't match any scene in normal -- to accentuate the slight feeling of unreality, I stretched the thunderhead vertically by about 30 percent so its probably unlike anything that would really exist in nature. I've resized the image to USEFILM specs -- hopefully this attachment will be sharper. Thanks for your comment, until you mentioned it, I hadn't noticed the image had gone soft in the uploaded jpg file. Peta, please pass the glasses.

At first, since I work in NYC, I said this an impossible shot. But after reading your explanation I am very impressed. This is simply outstanding. The only thing I might critique, and this is my opinion only and I could be wrong, but even at the angle you show, the Empire State Building would still be higher then the Chrysler building.Again a wonderful work.

Hi Jim. Well, let me say that the sky looks amazing. I suspect that it, in and of itself, might make an interesting study. Before reading your comments, I first studied the picture itself. And the thought that came into my mind was that this was a composite. That's neither here nor there, save to say that it is readily apparent to the naked eye that this is not a single image. Some giveaways: the buildings are somewhat soft, while the clouds are perfectly sharp; the shadows on the buildings indicate the sun's position in the sky where it could not possibly be to achieve the exposure you have in the sky. Overall, I'd say you have a magnificent sky shot merged with a cityscape that does not quite fit. All that said, the techniques you used to blend were terrific -- very few telltale signs along the building's edges. Very creative work.
