About
This is one of 9 16 inch guns that was mounted on the Battleship USS Missouri and was used in action at the end of WWII and the Korean war. It was the right gun on turet No.2. This gun was in place when Japan's surrender was signed in Tokyo Bay in 1945. The gun weighs 120 tons and fires a 2100 pound round. With a trained crew, the gun could be fired at a rate of one round per minute. The gun must be changed out every 280 round because of destruction of the barrel rifeling. The rifeling was a sleve that could be changed out by heating the barrel to withdraw the old sleve and replaced. There were additional guns manufactured so ship mounted guns could be changed out quickly and return to service.
