OH!!! Forgot to tell ya... that small group to the left is not paying attention because they are playing a traditional drum and singing a "Flag Song." To the right... off in the distance... that fella in the for edge... that is Derek. He is one who is in position to change the Rez attitude.

It is so simple and yet complex. Very short here... will try and find something to send you next week that may help. I mean as in Nations/States Like England, Italy, OZ and N'Zeeland... the reservations have their own Constitution. Yet, all American Indians are citizens of the US. Kind'a like Vatican City vs. Rome. The Rez has their own police force. The Rez has their own elected delegation. They fly the Stars and Bars... but hold tight to culture. The US government has given them individual rights status and MOST reservations have control over mineral rights... but not all. It is strange. I was given a great bit of info a few days back: FAQ about American Indians and the reservations. I think I know where it is... will try and get it to you next week.

soveriegn nations... so...like as in other countries... wtf... or did you mean sovereign states like Virginia and Washington etc... well flags... can come... the aboriginal flag was designed in the early seventies from memory.. http://www.indigenousaustralia.info/culture/the-flag.html tells me 71... so I dont see why each "nation" doesn't or hasn't devised its own flag. The Australina flag and the Aboriginal flag are flown side by side the state say WA Vic etc flag is flow lower than the other two.. that is on a shorter staff

It is a tangled mess... the US flag, the ceremony, the status of Native Americans (The reservation, ALL reservations) are treated as sovereign nations with near absolute self-governing power... and the US flag is revered and promoted, but I do feel there is a layer below the surface that roils at this... YET!!! The only known "flag" of a pre-Columbian people was the Inca flag... so, maybe... what ever country one identifies with gives balance. Don't know, haven't digested it enough... just saying...

yeah it struck me that no one was paying attention... now.. I dunno but when you do this sort of thing unless its a daily occurrence then some sort of ceremony needs to be observed... I used to put the flags out and C&A back in the old days and it was done without ceremony... but there was no one standing around either like there is in your shot... its interesting... I mean (to expand) I am a fervernt believer that the culture of the american flag is too ridiculous in terms of respect overkill, overuse etc etc to even bother to begin discussing.. the auusies dont much care about theirs either.. I guess thats what struck me about the shot...
