I hoped a bit more details on the highlights but still I am very very glad for this result. Shutter speed was 4s with usage if the auxiliary shutter and manually holding the shutter button. (I just used the clock of my mobile phone.) Any comments would be very welcome.
Thank you so much for the in depth going comment, Andre! Now I have some more clues about potential ways for a bettering, and also more general knowledge about night photography in general.
You might smile now, but there are indeed some weekends when the dim the lights down and they use candles for light. I think I will try that too, if I have the luck to be there when they do it.
As about asking the captain to dim the lights... hey, it is Switzerland here, ey? He would rather take a look at his plan for the week and tell me that he has "definite orders" and that he "is doing his duty". ;-)
This turned out pretty well Nick. But I think you know it could be better. It is always difficult to get the correct exposure throughout the entire image with shots like this one. I have nothing against the dark rich colour of the front of the boat, sky, smoke stack and background. However, the 4sec. exposure was just a little too long for the strong lights in the middle of the image and the National sign on the building. Sorry, I don't really have any suggestions to improve that. Other than asking the captain to turn down the lights a bit. :) If the lights were out on the boat, and dimmer on the sign, you probably would have had to go to about ten seconds at f11. Unfortunately, once the highlights are gone, there isn't a lot that can be done. The same problem happens when shooting night shots with a strong moonglow. You need the exposure everywhere except where the moon washes a path. Andre
