If it's a celtic cross as Harry says, I guess it symbolised the sun. Later, early christians in Ireland used it in churches because it was easier to convert pagans this way, by leaving their original signs of belief (and still, it was a cross).

The idea of being able to see the stained-glass windows also seem very good, but the wealth of variation in tones, perfect contrast, centralized form a great composition in Black and White.
