About
A bit off the norm (but then, what else ould ya expect from me??) A few days ago I was working around the house and had me Zune cranked up… listening to music. MM came by, asked what I was listening to and I offered her the right side bit of my headphones. She listened for a moment… then focused in for more moments… then started making faces…. In her ear was the music side of Barry McGuire’s “Eve of Destruction.” A great anti-war song from the 1960’s. In MY side of the headphones was the vocal track. Seems that back in the day stereo was 2 tracks: vocal/music. She had the music side. Coming out of the vocal side (the left side… the ear side shown in the pic) was what I was listening to. After a bit MM pulled away and said, “When will the singing start?” Oh my… Era vs. Technology. The left side had the words… MM was listening to nothing of importance. I had to hurriedly switch around the headphones so she could hear Barry’s gravelly voice. “I like his voice.” After this bit was over I started thinking and smiling to myself…. Current technology gives us the opportunity to listen to “Eve of Destruction” at the snap of a button… but the old stuff was still 2 track stereo… and I never took that into consideration. The photo is of the “lyric” side of the head phones… out of which I heard:
The eastern world, it is exploding Violence flarin’, bullets loadin’ You’re old enough to kill, but not for votin’ You don’t believe in war, but what’s that gun you’re totin’ And even the Jordan River has bodies floatin’
But you tell me Over and over and over again, my friend Ah, you don’t believe We’re on the eve of destruction.
Don’t you understand what I’m tryin’ to say Can’t you feel the fears I’m feelin’ today? If the button is pushed, there’s no runnin’ away There’ll be no one to save, with the world in a grave [Take a look around ya boy, it's bound to scare ya boy]
Yeah, my blood’s so mad feels like coagulatin’ I’m sitting here just contemplatin’ I can’t twist the truth, it knows no regulation. Handful of senators don’t pass legislation And marches alone can’t bring integration When human respect is disintegratin’ This whole crazy world is just too frustratin’
Think of all the hate there is in Red China Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama You may leave here for 4 days in space But when you return, it’s the same old place The poundin’ of the drums, the pride and disgrace You can bury your dead, but don’t leave a trace Hate your next-door neighbor, but don’t forget to say grace And… tell me over and over and over and over again, my friend You don’t believe We’re on the eve Of destruction Mm, no no, you don’t believe We’re on the eve of destruction.
And MM just looked puzzled and wondered what she was suppose to be listening to…..
ahhh yes you may leave here for four days in space etc.. a favourite line or two of mine ever since I first heard back in the day.. It was true too.. a civilisation that could not stand, fell although not entirely.. the new archaeology.. the filmed documentary with clips from then Kent State Uni etc Neil composing Ohio in ten minute flat.. seize the day… largely an irrelevance to today’s kids… we fought so hard…
