Hi Brigitte R.

thank you for the response, I am not a big meat eater so I found the experience shocking.BUt I am not a hippocrite, I eat meat I just never understood the process before.

I am an ex-military photographer and have been working in the newspaper (press) business for years, so I have seen shocking and disturbing sights for a large part of my career. Death is part of the business I record. But the callous and offhand manner in which these animals were dispatched was chilling.

I have an old school friend who is a state advocate who had the following to say:
"Why do we cause such suffering when we can live happy and heathy lives without inflicting such misery on other sentient beings?
Habit can never be a substitute for thought!.

A fellow photoghrapher, when confronted by these images said, 'can I have chips with my steak please!'

So some are horrified and some find it commonplace.

I do not think the meat industry likes these type of images getting into the public domain so you are exactly right on that point.

**Another interesting point, for instance is that USA's top four meatpackers control 80 percent of the beef market. We hear that farmers are subsidized to over-produce corn, which then goes into Coke, Sweet & Low, diapers, Motrin and cattle feed. We're told that the gut of a cow fed on corn breeds the deadliest strains of E.coli; that the Monsanto Co. owns every last one of its genetically engineered soybean seeds; that the Smithfield Hog Processing Plant in North Carolina slaughters 32,000 pigs per day. Fifty years ago, we're advised, it took 70 days to raise a chicken to slaughter. Today it takes 48.

South Africa is no better. My mother was a 'farm girl' and we grew up on healthy and often home grown vegetables.

I think the issue of what we actually eat, is worth further investigation.

Bazil, it is interesting to hear your take on this... my thoughts were similar in that I realize as much meat as our society eats and let me add "enjoys"... I wonder how many actually think about the process their much enjoyed steaks go through. I have no doubt that the meat industry would not want these types of images in the public as it would surely hinder the buisiness of making money. My mind cringes however at the idea that there are laws to protect pets and other domestic animals (which I am happy for as I feel innocent animals need all the protection they can get), yet farmed animals are all but forgotten... and many are in serious situations of abuse their whole lives... the only escape for them, shockingly, is the result you show in your image. I think you are a brave human to endure even long enough to take this picture, much less spend 4 hrs there. I bet you will never look at even a hamburger in the same way again. Hugs to you and thank you for sharing your "story".

Gracias, fue un trabajo difícil de hacer pero realitically esto ha estado ocurriendo por décadas. Hay algunas personas que siento que no debería haber fotografiado esta ..... pero es importante que la gente entienda que proviene de su carne - ¿no?

Tienes mucha razón en lo que decís. Ojalá estas fotos hicieran que los humanos fuéramos menos crueles con los animales, pero esto seguramente se repite en todo el mundo.... es "la industria de la carne"...

Muy bien por tu trabajo fotográfico, es muy bueno.

Gustav, I spent four hours in this place and I have to tell you, I was shocked at the business of death. I was told it was a necessary evil and people never think how their steaks arrive on the table.
I now can tell you in detail.
Cruel does not even begin to tell you the story.

As a photographer, how a story ends when I get up in the morning is for for me, always a surprise!
