A big pity that its thumb doesn't really give an impression of how good this image is, Dave! The plasticity and the glossy property of the surface of that horse are perfectly burned on the image. One can see the exact form and the relief, but also have a strong haptic impression of what it feels like to put the fingers on the object.
Exactly the same happens also with the decoration feathers on its head. Different look and feel but the same high fidelity of depiction. The two different things add a good tension here too.
The exposure and the focus were both perfect for that. I consider the softened background as exactly what was needed in order to catch the atmosphere but also to not let the attention of the spectator flow out of the main subject. It is perfect how one "knows" about the special atmosphere of the place and what must be going on, just by one look.
The composition is also perfect. A portrait of the horse and nothing more in a very appealing coloring. If we also consider the rather hard light conditions then the shot's quality gets even higher.

A lovely colourful close up of one of these traditional fairground horses. They always looked so elegant and as a child it was always the ride I most wanted to go on.
