About Scan of an old print. Hand colored the old fashioned way; printed on Opalure G paper I think, then hand colored using Marshall and other oil paints. I think the print looks pretty good but the scan picks up the texture of the paper. I debated whether to upload or not.

Hi, Jason. Your handtinting is nice to see. I am glad you uploaded it. My grandfather use to do it before color film was invented. He was considered the Dean of Boston Photographers by the Globe. But it was painstaking work, as was negative retouching. I feel very fortunate to have the tools we have today.

I used to spend hours in the darkroom, so my use of PhotoShop is usually to bring the print back to the interpretation in my mind with the tools at hand.

I am rarely satisfied with scans, because they flatten out the original and many digital cameras raw files are dull and gray until tweeked in PS. Of course you can set the camera on vivid and get saturated colors, but it reverts when you convert to RGB from Adobe profile.

I see some gray in the photo you uploaded, that is why I could not resist tweeking it. The lighting is absolutely beautiful on the girl on the left. Did you do any photos of her by herself?

Best regards, Leora

I forgot to add my version...so here it is.

The mood and lighting of your photo are very appealing ... but, as I said, I was not comfortable with the staging.

Thank you for your thoughts and taking the time! I was debating whether to upload or not. With everything "Photoshopped" these days I thought I would upload an old fashioned hand tinted photo. All the best, Jason

Dear Jason, you can get rid of the texture problem from the scan by adding some contrast. I used curves. Then desaturate a bit to get back the nice tint.

The problem is that one girl looks very uncomfortable leaning in and the other girl is not helping to include her in the photo. They are not relating very well, so it looks forced.

I hope you do not mind my candor.

Happy New Year, Leora

Good to hear from you Charles. I had seen you on here and commented on some of your photos but that was a while back. Have a great new year, Jason

Yes, Jason it's me-Charles Freeman. Discovered you by accident. I Too am "mostly" retired, still live where there are few models.
