About These are some of the hoodoos along the Bow River near Banff, Alberta. A description, taken from the "Canadian Encyclopedia" ( http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.com/index.cfm?PgNm=TCE&Params=A1ARTA0003834) follows:

Hoodoo rocks are often fantastically shaped, naturally carved rocks or earth pedestals, pillars or columns. The word hoodoo probably derives from voodoo, a West African-based religion in which magical powers can be associated with natural features. Hoodoos conjure up images of strange events. Use of the term appears to be largely restricted to western North America.

Hoodoos may range from a few centimetres to several metres in height. They result from the combined erosional action of wind, rain and running water, which together with a variety of physical and chemical weathering processes sculpt the material into different shapes.

Hoodoos tend to be best developed in horizontally bedded rocks or strata in which relatively soft units are interspaced with more resistant ones; eg, alternating layers of shale and sandstone. Differential weathering and erosion is enhanced, the soft material being removed more rapidly than the hard. Hoodoos are often capped by a resistant layer (cap rock) which protects the lower units. Removal of the cap rock results in rapid destruction of the unprotected base.

Oooh - somewhere I've been!

It's a beautiful area and excellently taken.

I bet you'll want to go back there with the K20D. The image quality will be so amazing with your new camera.

Good details and balance of ligthing, Dave! The depth of the view is quite vivid though the finest details that extend over the whole DoF. The coloring is also very nice and natural - it enhances the natural textures. I don't know if there could be some differnet composition for giving the landscape more impact.

Cheers!

A great photo & a great lesson in geology, Dave. I put it among my favorites.
I respond with cypresses from near Jerusalem. The photo was taken through the window of a bus, so I had to brush it up a little...
Thank you for your kind words,
Rafi

Wonderful landscape Dave. The Hoodoos and river make a beautiful combination of the earths wonder. The composition is perfect. The color and exposure are really true to life. I really like the depth of the image from your perspective of the shot. Thanks for making me want to travel that direction.
Be well, Stan 7

An excellent shot and great explanation of the phenomena Dave. My oldest boy was out west last August too. He had a few shots of the Hoodoos, but none from this angle. It almost reminds me of our own Scarborough Bluffs. I think that they are a different kind of erosion all together though.

Awesome Landscape Dave, and the Hoodoos are amazing, nicely done. This might be a great place to try a night shot with a full moon for light.

Thanks for the interesting explanation. That always adds a lot to a photo. You did leave out whether you checked for trout in that beautiful stream. To a fisherman that is important!. Del.

Excellent details to this wonderful landscape my dear Dave and a great about that furthers my education on Canada. I love, in particular, the movement in the river. It has revealed several different patterns at various points. A great capture my good friend.
Sorry I haven't been about for a while, Ian has gradually worsened and has needed a lot of attention this last week. I am busy catching up as best able. My very best wishes to you as always.....Ray
