About Candid shot of a quick smile when she saw the camera. Was just finished getting an 08 painted on her cheek. This is for my tutor of 5.6, Martin. Hope this one makes you smiles as well! Be well, Stan

Thanks louis, so appreciated. This was one of my controversial pictures because I used a smudge tool to remove some slight blemishes. I was not to good at it but I sure got a lot of comments with regards to my lack of skill. I just had to laugh at my beginning efforts. thanks for the nice comments. I will stop by some more of your images as well, have a great day.

Thank you on your comment on Ci Ci. Your pictures are excellent. This one is very sharp and you captured her expression nicely. Her eyes are almost identical to Ci Ci's. Cheers!!

Stan I like it, you are much more accomplished than I am. Learning on your own has some drawbacks but is still rewarding when others show the possibilities. What did you use for your redo?

Thanks Ania, I think the jury is still out on this one. My PS work left some to be desired but the look and smile worked. A quick candid shot with an offered up smile.

Thanks Joe, a lot of ground to cover. I shot this in raw with an older Canon film lens. It is a 35-70mm on a film camera. The lens was at 45mm which equates to about 72mm on my Rebel. I was about 20 ft away and cropped the image to just a head shot in PS. It was still in raw when I did the crop. Then I converted to Jpeg, the levels were good and I did +7 contrast and -7 on brightness. I played with the smudge and did not see it on my new $5 monitor as well as I should have. I only sharpened once and then saved and downsized to post. I thought the smile and eyes were the compelling part of the picture and did not realize how bad of a smudge job I had done. The 5.6 that Martin referred to is DOF for portraits to help eliminate imperfections. I have done little with portraits so this is all new to me. I broke the rules and had fun doing it. I wished I had backed up the raw files before I reinstalled CS2. The guy from India said it was not necessary to back up the files. That will teach me! Thanks again for taking the time to help me. Be well, Stan

Very nice candid portrait Stan. I agree with Martin's comment regarding the smudging but have to disagree with his comments as I understand them on the use of RAW and ISO setting. With portraits, I feel you should strive for detail and sharpness, you need very sharp detail in the eyes. Actually, I almost alway strive to maximize these two factors. I always shoot in highest resolution with RAW because it gives the maximum detail and much more control in PS. You can always adjust this in the computer but you can't go the other direction (gain more resolution). I suspect when you take a picture, posting to this site, may not be your only intended use and you never know when shooting how you might want to use the image eg prints. With your camera you should not see any grain when using ISO 200, RAW or JPEG. Never heard of the 5.6 effect. Is is depth of field? If so, RAW does not effect on DOF.
To me, your pre-processed image looks soft due to being out of focus or motion blur (likely camera movement), maybe both. The posted image beside the mudges suffers from oversharping in PS.
Also, I'm a big fan of colour as apposed to colourless shots but that's a another topic.
Regards,
Joe

Hi Darren, I just lost an Apple cinema display and replaced it with an older IBM CRT. I am new to photoshop and tried to get rid of a few red areas on her face to give her a break. My lens was finding a few areas that stood out. I did not realize that my bad smudge job was even showing until my friend Martin told me. My eyes deceived me and I thought I had done a less noticeable job. Sepia or B/W would have been a better choice. No mustache, just a little skin blemishes. Sorry for the bad processing. Her is the pre-processed picture. Thanks for letting me know that my photoshop skills need a little more work. Be well, Stan

Not smudged.

Darren Arena Darren Arena   {K:2999} 8/12/2008
Very pretty smile Stan, I agree with the earlier posts! The smudges on her upper lip and chin are confusing me a bit. Did you photoshop a moustache and goatee off of her, or maybe some unsightly facial hair? I honestly think the smudges add a GREAT story to our imaginations! Thanks for the fun picture man! -Darren-

It was the camera that induced the smile. Quite the smile for sure.

Marty, thanks for the frank and honest comment. Guess I will pay a little more attention to the basics and rules. My experiment in raw showed me what it can do. I just did not use it to my advantage on this one. Thanks for the words of advice and help.

Stan,

1st of all I thank you for the tribute. Now then, let’s look at what we did wrong.

Shooting in RAW format regarding street shots is not a good idea. RAW shows way too much detail and totally defeats the f/5.6 effect. We don't need RAW for posting on this site, because the files are so small. I can see the pores in her skin for goodness sake. Not to mention the PS smudges on her skin that you used to remove her blemishes. It also appears that you might have used the macro mode with your lens for this one, which is not a great idea regarding portraits. (T00 Much detail)... :(

RAW magnifies the grain, which is undesirable. Using a ISO of 200 should be much less grainy, IMHO... My lessons showed to use an jpeg of Large Fine, ISO 100 - 1600, f/5.6, and a shutter speed of 100 - 125. You pretty much broke every rule, that I taught you on this one...

You have always told me you have a thick skin, so this critique will prove it... Sorry Ol' friend, but this post tanks big time... It's just probably caused by the new monitor you just got, as well as not listening to what I taught you... ;)

All My Love to you and yours,

Marty

PS. Send me the full file and I will see what we can do?

Now here is some ISO 1600 grain, which is less grainy than this post of yours. Detail but not too much detail!
