You just injected a very very nice virus into my mind, Ian! Contrast as a mean for perfect images? Still admitting its power and usefullness I must also admit that many times a washed out set of contours can be stronger. Much stronger! I realize now that I try to introduce such elements many times in my images, but up to now I don't know anything else than reducing the DoF. (Along with all its unflexible being.) But a lens of low contrast... if it were also controllable then: wow! Wow, I say! And I think of contrast at the contours specifically and not as much about dynamics. It would be like controlling the "suddenness" of transitions at the boundaries of two given objects. What a dream!
The almost forgotten soft focus lenses did something in that direction, but not quite. Unfortunately they seem to be neglected by the manufacturers. I am sure that they could develop such a technology but the uniform "laws" were taken for granted too quickly, I guess. We seem to need "absolute laws" because they are easy to follow, or am I wrong?
Anyway, following your work I get some good hints about how to do that using no special lens, and that's a good aid when I want to let some distant sky get the look of old blue jeans. There must be some technique of combining camera shift and focus to achieve this.
As about the blown out highlights, I wonder first why this is the case with digital photography. Technologically it is quite easy to add controlability of the highlights simply by putting some control on the camera that changes the response of the CCD to a less than linear function of saturation with available light. So you could just turn the response of the CCD to highlights less sensitive without changing its responce elsewhere.
As I see it, it's all about compressing the real light to photographically achievable ranges
Cheers!
Nick

Well I could always set the contrast levels to "high" in camera Nick. Seriously though lens reviews often describe their qualities in contrast and colour terms. I remember all too well how dull my old zooms were. I don't know how aperture effects contrast yet. I know a shade would help. I've often thought it's easier these days to add contrast digitally than reduce it and still get nice results. I've wondered lately about if it's better to find a low contrast lens in some ways since there is the problem of blown out hilights in many digital exposures. I think given the choice between fear of the blown out sky and diffuse light I'd take the diffuse effect any day, because I can always add the contrast.

It could be the result of quick nervous brushes of color, or also the magnified view of a part of a painting but anyway it has the character of a painting, Ian!
The upper right corner looks like a transition to fireworks. It matches well the overall "speedy look".
Cheers!
Nick

Thanks dear Roger. The mere idea of regarding my work "on a par" with those of Ian's makes me feel very honored, and I'm grateful for your encouraging words. I wonder if Ian would agree, though :)

Hi Minoo.. its probably worth keeping an eye on Tosh.. I see similar patterns in both your works... it would be interesting to see you and him exhibited side by side, with your vastly different but equally charming studies of plants..

I love this shot! It says 'hurricane' to me, although by your description it's not! I think the cold understated colour works brilliantly and you chose a perfect shutter speed/driving speed combination. Very good!
