There's a Miles Davis cd called Gondwana. It's part of a live show recorded in Japan. It's a free jazz or modern jazz piece, at times hectic and disorganized.

It reminds me of the artwork on albums by "Fields of the Nephilim", Ian! It's quite going into the sense outside a sense in its own kind of look. It does present the "forest behind the ice wall" but there is no real difference between the two. Last exit for the lost and it's locked!

I've got a lot of mileage out of the ice shot, the sense of flying balls of snow, otherwise it's tial and error.
You using photoshop? I do mostly.
dogwaffle was recommended to me by Fabio, it is used by professional animators (and it is free)... they use layering often in animation to create a sense of depth. I haven't got to grips with it yet.
