Oh, wai-wai-wait!
Well, Shirley, first of all and really with all respect, sincerely, please leave me in peace with awards in local competitions that nobody knows about and nobody will ever citate, except of course of some neighbors and local papers. Much more, leave me in peace with any "award" at all. I still don't know, really don't know about the value of that. Is it that why we all do that? "Awards"? A bit too far from idealism to me.
I didn't talk to you about "acknowledgement" but rather about photography. The two things are completely different. Many too many will say to you, you are a great photographer, and hand you over their "awards". Others, many too many too, will say you are a bad photographer and say "oh, my God, what an awful image!". Well, will that ever change anything for you? I really hope not! You just go on *your* way and that's all - no reason to refer to "acknowledgments" or to "disapprovals". We are here for a sincere, quite laid back, and easy approach. And so we talk, and that's all.
So, I find you "too romantic", you find me "too realistic", but that's great! I am a bit disappointed for the fact that so many people here react as patriotic when I am so direct, but listen, I don't do that for pretending I'm some kind of "guru", OK? I only think that we are all so far away from each other, and if we don't just speak our minds and tell what we really think, then we are in real danger to turn to some kind of "caricatures" of our own selves - liars. It would be a pity, Shirley, for something that started so sincerely, like this forum, to convert to some kind of "diplomacy congress". For me at least.
So, feel also free, completely free, to critisize me too, or even to devastate my "shots",even if they won "awards". Why not? My "awarss" can never never be your mind! And who knows? Perhaps I get a further glimpse of that strange thing we all call "photography".
In other words, perhaps you get some piece of my "realism mania", and I get a good piece of your "romanticism", and so we step further. Tedious process but it is such a fun!
Cheers!
Nick

Well, Nick, you are certainly entitled to your opinion, jaded as it is. You are the only one who seems to find so much wrong with this romantic image. I'm no so 'new' to photography or a 'wannabe', as you think. I've won award around the world for my photos. Of course, not everything I take or creat is 'wonderful'. None of us is perfect or does great work all the time, but on average, I'm not doing so bad.

There are many ways to pose, Shirley. Sometimes just smiling in the camear, sometimes also dancing in front of it, why not? A dance always contains moments of quick motion, and also moments when the dancer "presents" the own self to the "public". by standing, showing him/herself under the best possible light, etc. This kind of interaction of motion and standstill you can see in all kind of dance, or performance in general. It is an integrated part of it.
Except of course if the dancer (or whatever performer) isn't aware of being watched, captured, or filmed. Then we have a real study of his/her style and skill, as natural as such poses can never be. This one looks like "look at me". Cheap trick but not really exciting. Dancing achieves its apogaee when somebody dances as if nobody else would be watching, and this exactly is what is completely missing here.
The moment of the capture taken for itself and without any other possibuility to know what she was doing is the only thing I see. It doesn't matter what she was doing for you or anybody else. The events that were real for you, are not real for be, simply because I wasn't there. And this is one main mistake that msot wannabes make. They think that the spectator has the obligation to see and feel the situation in which they were embedeed themselves. So, take a look. Dance you say. OK. The light fabric that her cloths are made of. just hangs down. Her hair hangs down. There is nothing here that tells me, as a spectator, that she was dancing. The spectator sees only posing. And it is the *image* that counts, and not what the situation was. If we can't see any dancing on the *image*, do you really think that it is an excuse to say that "She was not posing, she was dancing"?
I don't assume, I simply see the image.
Cheers!
Nick

My dear Nick, she was not 'posing' as you assume...she was dancing. She is a balerina and was dancing in the garden for me, and I caught multiple shots as she danced. Careful what you assume.
But thank you for your comments.:)))

Of it had less of that posing attitude in the name of adolescense poetry albums it would be even better, Shirley. The untalented posing aside, it is a good image, on which I see some parallels to Paul Lara's shots, some steps beyond his perfection.
The romantic look and feel that you wanted to catch, worked in some points and failed in others. The light and the details on the face and the immediate surroundings of it are very good, and also quite unusual. The separation by focus of the main character from the backgrouns is also good indeed.
But then, the details on her lack that tiny little last bit of sharpness. And that alone would still be perfectly OK, if that kitschy posing were something different, something natural, something that doesn't look as if somebody wanted to give me a visual analogon of Will's lines without knwoing that over-romantification is simply kitsch! Natural appearance of a "romantic sould" is less unhelpful demonstration of the own "oooh, so romantic" attitude, and more silent acceptance of the natural, Shirley.
Cheers!
Nick

Shirley. I agree with the previous comments. This is classic Shirley Cross photography and is why we love your work. The dynamics of this image need to be explained by a better artist than I. Your eyes start at the highlights in the hair. Then you see the fantastic eyes (color helps the eyes) and then the red dress. Like many of your photos she has a vulnerability that is suggested by the shoulder strap. Then the sparkles near the small of her back add a balance that perhaps someone else can explain. This is an image worth serious study. Just wonderful.
