You did help a lot, Ian, and I thank you very much for that. It means to me that in such cases not only the shutter speed of the pans themselves is important, but also (and perhaps much more) the ratio of the shutter speeds of the different pans to each other, as it defines the end product and what it contains at all.
So, I have now a rule of thumb for trying such shots. Thanks a lot!
Nick

hmmm, for "ulb" of course, read "bulb". May be exif data still on the file (never too sure how to get that).

hmmm it COUlD be shot it on ulb but wouldn't have been more than two minutes. It was a full moon... I knew I'd lose the harbour lights on the right pretty quickly (first pan would have got rid of most of them). I don't think I've helped but thanks Nick. :)

I find this one excellent for its fantastic (in the sense of imaginary) look that still preserves quality of capture, Ian! It does make an abstraction but it is not simply some kind of quick and dirty implementation of "fantasy". It composes for example hills out of clouds, or stars out of the lights.
But I also have some questions here. How did you avoided the "ghosts and echoes" that appear when panning? Was it perhaps some seconds on a certain scene, then quick panning, and then some additional seconds on the other scene? I mean in such a way that the motion blur simply didn't have any time to burn under the low light but the more "constant" scene did? I wonder if I could use that technique as another kind of multiexposure, that is.
Cheers,
Nick

I cherish the thought. I can send you a jpeg or something with more bit depth if that matters (I haven't experienced the benefit of big files really myself). I did a few that night and am looking at floating some of 'em if you wanta wait but otherwise absolutely.

bravo, excellent work- the idea of stopping time after time has created that jurking effect that makes this shot really great- as if many layers piled over one another-- really good work, v.

Been dying to text ya! What's written on the thing? Won't mention the mac (oops, just did). Did this months ago but knocking the top half off it helps so may look at the others.
