City - Deception Island State - Country - Antarctica
About
Deception Island just off the Antarctic Penninsula, is a dormant caldera that was a turn of the century whale processing station. The rusty remnants are still there, a haunting reminder of the death, destruction and near extinction of humpback whales in the southern ocean. Eruptions of the volcano put an end to human activity here, as if the earth was protesting such carnage. The geothermal waters in the harbour are make it a popular stopping place for tourist expedition ships like the one we were on. However, it was a sad, dreary experience and I was happy to leave this place.
Thanks Deb for the telling reminder.. it seems the Japs have listened to Aust for a change at least and are not going to be hunting the humpbacks this year.. Its odd to have a govt sposored program of rearing children to the the taste of whale meat and then claiming the hunt is for scientific purposes.. I mean how many people are they keeping in jobs ... bugger all it really is just bullsh1t a totally manufactured scenario.. I mean before they had ships capable of sailing all the way to Antarctica how the hell did the catch these whales then... rant rant rant
