LOL At least you can see I was telling the truth Jan... How cool, a Yarn Swift... Crossed my mind something along those lines but thought NO... Go with the more confugulated...

~GRIN~ Jan... I have deliberately not scrolled down to read the comments... I want to guess LOL...

OK... Circular, lots of interesting holes & slots evenly placed on the angled slats being held by the spines... The turned pieces sitting in the internal square frame work have me a little puzzled & using the twine/wool as a scale perspective...

I'm going to guess at may be a net maker for fish... LOL Now I'm going to post then scroll down to see if you tell what it is...

Love it regardless Jan... A very curious piece indeed...:)

Onie...

Thanks Dave.... it was beautifully made even if its operation defies reason and logic.

well, I spoiled it for myself by reading the comments... and glad I did before I made a fool out of myself, too... neat contraption, I could see the little cutters and figured it had something to do with rope, twine, yarn...

Happy New Year for 2008 to all my friends at USEFILM.
As for the "object" the answer is a Yarn Swift. This one was designed and made before 1800 and similar and disimilar designs are still commercially available. The device converts skeins to balls of yarn.
Several of you had a close guess of the purpose (but not the name) so thanks and congrats to all that guessed.
Attached is a photo of a more detailed description.
--Best Wishes, Jan

Um...I would guess something to spool rope onto, and then collapse the inner diameter when it's done.
