I didn't worry me when I first looked at it (and I generally tend not to read everyone else's comments), but I've now read the comments and looked at rhe rgb values of the brighter areas and also checked the histogram and don't see any problem. I just figured it was what the lighting was like and you captured it as it was. Geez, what would be the point of an image with the same tone throughout - don't answer that, I've posted a few here !

Excellent monochrome effect on a good strong composition.

Thanks for the comment Piet.. umm bracketing.. the shot was hand held.. which makes it a tad difficult to do the merge thing.. with regard to the sharpening I take your point but add that the original 5Mb image on my monitor looks ok and that the shrinking to UF specs has had something to do with the reduction in overall sharpness. The image was shot at 1/400 @f13 in pattern metering mode

first about the exposure technique, because the digi's lack high dinamic range, extreme condition is hard to handle.in such cases i usualy work with spot metering measur the shadow and working manualy,i also decrease the "correct" measurment by two stop that most of the time will be enough,if not you can always fix it in the computer,we all have to remember that blown out area cant reconstruct. about the compo it is interesting but it make me "dizzy" ;) .that something that it fully up to you. anyway i found this image to be very interesting

This photograph has many interesting qualities which I definitely appreciate. Stone carvings with lots of detail are difficult to create and many time even more difficult to photograph. So I understand the high contrast issues which you are dealing with.
In the middle of your photo is a large white spot, which naturally draws the eyes, couple that with consistent vertical lines and a strong dark vertical line going towards the lower right hand corner and you have a good piece which directs the eyes around the whole photograph.
My personal preference would have been to bracket this shot using a quicker shutter speed. Once back at my computer I would have taken this exposure and merged it with the bracketed shot that was one quicker. It would have given more definition in the blown out area in the center of the photograph. Then I would have tried to selectively sharpen the edge of the stairs so that the definition of the carving was clearly visible.
Other than that I like this image!
