Nessa -- There was no whispering; with Gene's little voice and Nelson's hearing impairment along with all the room noise, they wound up shouting to each other to be heard. If Gene had not offered to climb up on Nelson's shoulder they would never have had a chance to talk. Nelson told me later that he felt the conversation was well worth it.

Perhaps Gene just turned it on? I know that when my Grandma thought us kids were making too much noise she never complained, just turned her hearing aid off and got on with whatever she was doing. We loved going to Grandmas, noisy little beggars we were.
