About I worked all weekend and haven't had time to go out and shoot (though I did do some shooting while working), so it's to the old vault where I dust off older, passed over images and look for the gems. This 6 foot tall baby giraffe was a new arrival at the Los Angeles zoo.

Awww this is the cutest sock-puppet I've ever seen...
Lol, not a bad photo either :P He looks sleepy, or maybe sulky...Either way, his expression is similar to that of a two-legged bubbah :p
I agree about burning the ear just a smidge. And I do like the composition/crop, and the background you were very lucky to have!

Thanks Nicole! Been off for a bit but hope to be back to this great stuff a lot more -- soon. I was surprised to see the BiP . . . I think it's the first time one popped up so long after the upload . . . about 3 weeks . . . but I haven't been uploading and I'm about willing to bet it's Summer for the staff here too . . . what a pleasant surprise! (This guy was SO cute too)!

Doyle D. Chastain Doyle D. Chastain   {K:101119} 7/19/2007
Thanks very much Sylvia! The cement wall can be a blessing or a curse as the weather wears these colors into it. Initially, I bypassed this thinking that the RAW thumbnail indicated a BG color too close to the subject color . . . I had a similar problem with an Ibex shot which I never did overcome. The conversion from RAW, though was a pleasant surprise since the BG was different enough to pull back from the subject and I did manage to get a superb DOF. Always good to hear from you!

Lisa!
Always the charmer!! I'm sitting on a 'vault' of SO many images . . . it's not funny. But, serious shots are culled immediately. Two images from this shoot already garnered BiPs . . . so I select only the best of the best! Still . . . great shots (like this) remain for later . . .

Hope all is well with you and yours . . . and thanks always for your time and comments. Someday . . . a Lion!!! ;)

I'm surprised that this one was in the vault for so long.

With the background and colors it almost appears as if this baby giraffe was in a studio posing for this shot.

Excellent detail captured.

"who other than you would think of a square crop on a giraffe?"

Jan - That's a GREAT complement coming from YOU! Greatest thing (IMHO) about photography is being able to see the same thing as a hundred other people . . . but somehow seeing it different. It never ceases to amaze me and only a photographer (and possibly a painter) can comprehend that three people standing side by side will see three different things.

Next time have a beer! LoL!

Doyle D. Chastain Doyle D. Chastain   {K:101119} 6/26/2007
Thanks Cathy . . . really wasn't much to it . . . the BG is a retaining wall with orangish rust and dark dirt and such running down it from the top . . . He was about four to 6 feet from the wall so setting aperture allowed me to blur the BG easily . . . I also artificially darkened the corners by selecting a large circle around my lil subject . . . inverting it . . . and slightly darkening light with 150 px feathering which makes slight darkness in three of the corners! :)

Doyle I <~~~~~

LOL! I must have been really tired last night. (No beer, only soft drinks) I have no idea what was going on when I was commenting.
1. My comment overlooked the quality of this fine photo and no constructive comment was offered.
2. I think the old commercial might have been a camel and not a giraffe
3. The devil made me do it.
4. Even if the commercial was later than the forties, I think it may have been before your time in any event.

Well -- I am wide awake today and only want to add that who other than you would think of a square crop on a giraffe? It works perfectly for the portrait of this young and beautiful creature. Nicely done.
On another note, something brewing here at work and will send you email about how it may effect Gene's schedule.
--Regards, Jan

This is such a gentle shot, the lighting is superb and I love the folds of skin around the jawline. The way this has been lit lifts it out of the background, I will have to figure out what you did that, cos its a really cool effect. Well done. CC

This is a sock puppet yeah?
Doyle, you should dust off your vault more often, this is a gem!
Great background (lucky, dirt and grime), nice warm safari colours.
How am I supposed to catch up on the gossip if you guys are going under the cone of silence with your ranting and raving!!! The forum has been very boring of late, no-one game enough to have their say-so, lest someone takes offense, leaves the site, or otherwise gets their panties in a twist. Free speech for all I say, especially giraffes :P
cheers, Beks

Uh oh, I've obviously missed some of the recent goings on during my periods of absence. Let's switch this thread to email...

I know what you mean John . . . it'd be SO simple to bring it back up to par . . . but it seems I have been deemed 'persona non grata' and a "Mediocre Photographer" so - in time I might drop you a line (e-mail) with details. I know something of the issues and (clearly) am less active . . . but I remember how it's changed over time and rule nothing out. I was referring to the UF I have known since 2oo3 . . . not the UF of today!

The "power of this site"? I was going to have a rant in the forums earlier, but as I've had my wrists slapped in the past, I decided not to. But in my view there's no power at the moment. Look at the "top rated" images. Or is it just me? And the front page - there's an EC, SC, POD and PhtOD from 2004, a FOD from 2005 and a critique from 2006. What's going on? Sorry to hit you with this one - just thought you might know something.

AJ

PS. Pleased to see that Gene is enjoying his travels...

By the way . . . the black along the top was there . . . dirt, dust, etc. coming down from the wall top . . . Just lucky with the DOF and color!

Thanks John . . . the camera was level, the shot is as it was . . . though I did crop negative space from the right. The burn brush . . . Oooooh . . . now that's the power of this site . . . didn't see it at all! Well done!

Ooh, I've just spotted something else! His ear could perhaps use a little touch of the burn brush?

I know the feeling, Doyle. Sometimes, I just pick out one or two that I like and forget to go back and look at the rest again later. Often there are shots there that are better than the ones that first caught my eye.

This is a lovely shot. I guess you were able to capture more detail due to his reduced height! A beautiful complementary background, also.

All I can think of to suggest here is if this is a crop, you might consider making his neck a little less than totally parallel to the frame. But this is really nit-picking...
